New wood burning boiler stoves banned.

Chased up a quote from a stove installer, to be informed that they can no longer install solid fuel ’boiler stoves’, as the government has yet to clarify the details of the European ‘EcoDesign Lot 20’ regulations.

I rang the Arada Stoves factory and they confirmed that it is not possible to design or manufacture a stove that is both capable of central heating a modern house while meeting the UK’s interpretation of the ‘Ecodesign’ specification, as the flue gasses cant get hot enough to burn 'clean' while warming the water jacket. Every stove manufacturer supplying the UK market has ceased production of ‘boiler stoves’ until the government clarifies the situation.

Theres no gas main for 10 miles, Kerosene fuel has risen from 40p/l last year to £1.32 this week, and electricity prices are spiralling out of control. I’m trying to make my cottages efficient and affordable for low income families, but this bulls**t bureaucracy means they're going to have to keep using horrendously inefficient Baxi open fires. Room heating stoves are still available, but the tenants would lose their existing water heating back boilers.

The only reason that I'm starting a thread here is to point out that we are 'led' by f**king idiots.

What price were the boiler stoves you are looking at ?

I've seen the so called "Green" log boilers, they are circa £3,500 plus you'll need a tank which is also circa £3,000 plus fitting.

That cannot be correct. The Dunsley Yorkshire central heating boiler is Defra approved although it is designed to burn at high temperature with the burn area not cooled by the boiler.

None left, the measures came in on the 1st of January.

What price were the boiler stoves you are looking at ?

I've seen the so called "Green" log boilers, they are circa £3,500 plus you'll need a tank which is also circa £3,000 plus fitting.

Having just double glazed the last 4 cottages theres enough in the pot for Charnwood / Arada (etc) type stoves and radiators, and for there to be a return on investment.

Thats not right. The Yorkshire does comply with the new legislation and Dunsley have been bringing new ranges of compliant stoves in since 2018 so I cannot see what it has to do with brexit. Certainly my Dunsley Yorkshire is sufficient to run the central heating on our old farmhouse although it is well insulated.
Sounds to me like the Arada salesman wishes he had stoves designed like the Yorkshire then he would not be losing sales.

A decent engineer could whip one up i reckon. We just took out our back boiler that was fitted in the early eighties. The copper pipes had started to corrode going into it throughthe wall, the back boiler is like new 5mm stainless throughout. My dads friend owned an engineering firm and made some prototypes for Grants. Ours was one of the prototypes, when you see it they are such a simple design

Are the 4 cottages in the same place ?

I know this is stretching the case but could you do one boiler across the 4 cottages ? I know practically in the UK this probably wouldn't work out as people don't necessarily get on.

Iv'e just installed a pellet burner for my heating and hot water, applied for and got the RHI which is dependent on the model I installed meeting clean air regs.

Yes just make sure there Ecodesign approved. If you google stove suppliers and Lot 20 you normally get a list of all the stoves they sell with the approved ones having a SIP logo to show there ecodesign approved.
