So if it's ok in NZ does this remove the social sigma of owning one in a low cost farming operation in the Uk ?

How many times do I have to say this. Your farms yield is rellavent to you.

Pointing out that their are different farming systems and they yield different does not make yield irrelevant. You still monitor it for your farm.

If you take a broader view and look at the industry as a whole then yield is irrelevant, this is the argument used when a producer is fixated on yield, in an attempt to point out it is not the be all and end all.
The yield on each farm is relevant to that farm depending on which system they are using.
Looking at the total industry there is no relevance at all, if it is possible to make good returns on lower yields how can it be.
