Wifes got a picture of me having a look about a 950 cow unit. Irishman, Scottishman, Welshman, Englishman and an Indian chap. Not a kiwi in sight. They must have all been at the beach.

Was there not 2 kiwis milking the Irish man's cows?

Of the 5 "farming systems", system 1 would be the best one to describe me, and yes I did have to "google" that to check it

From Lichfield to the glow worm caves across country, there was 5 new conversions in a row, all had big green machines and big feed pads. I was shocked, thought it was all about the gilltrap.

Not all giltrap @FonterraFarmer has a SAM he bought from old taupo road.

Those farms by the dam are pretty special. Jcb loaders. It's easy to have them when you spec them on the CMs contract.

I got it from Te Poi, but yes it was on Old Taupo Road when it was new!!!
When I had to get some parts for it at Maeroa Rd , they even remembered making it and who they sold it too!!!

No.

A couple of good payout years put paid to that idea for some.

Personally I think it did the industry more harm than good, could well be wrong!

I'm only a casual observer 12,000 miles away and even I can see the high payout years ruined the high profit dairy industry NZ once had

think it was 6 years old when i bought it at a local collective machinery sale,week later i had bill turn up from keenan for new blades and rubbers for the paddles nice try but they never had a penny out of us

Not many I don't think. The further south you go the more you will find cows grazing crops over winter but they will mostly be fodder beet, kale and sweedes.

How many times do I have to say this. Your farms yield is rellavent to you.

Pointing out that their are different farming systems and they yield different does not make yield irrelevant. You still monitor it for your farm.

If you take a broader view and look at the industry as a whole then yield is irrelevant, this is the argument used when a producer is fixated on yield, in an attempt to point out it is not the be all and end all.
The yield on each farm is relevant to that farm depending on which system they are using.
Looking at the total industry there is no relevance at all, if it is possible to make good returns on lower yields how can it be.

Agree. A few doing it though. See more barns and mixer wagons every time I go to NZ. More than I see in Aus.
