Plenty of threads on NFU insurance etc - we have always been with them but do you guys who are also with nfu pay the acreage payment ? Apparently you have to so to be legally covered - never read the mag and rarely go to meetings - thanks in advance.

Yes. Without going & digging out the paperwork, I think there is a general membership charge plus an acreage based payment to make up your sub.
Probably why the farmers with the biggest acreage get the loudest voice as they are contributing the most moolla .... and because they have the most time to work their way up the greasy pole

Your declared acreage has nothing to do with insurance to be honest, you can be insured with the NFU without being a member, unless I am very much mistaken.
Yes you can , but there is a discount for membership and also more importantly better clauses for coverage and less exclusions

The discount for membership is basically a marketing gimmick to try and keep people as members!

Because the NFU prices would be so high without it that no one, member or not would insure with them as their prices would be far higher than any other insurer out there!

I think your pretty much right , although I have a construction company and usually get 2 sometimes 3 quotes for all insurances . 30k ish nfu have missed out last 3 years , but rep reckons now I'm a member in agriculture they can take my construction insurance more competitively

Here is hoping

I really don't think many (if any) farmers join the NFU in order to get a discount on their insurance. I do think the NFU and NFU Mutual need to distance each other a bit. I know of many farmers who have moved away from the Mutual because the aren't competitive. They then say the NFU is no good because the insurance is too expensive! :banghead:

Being a NFU member should have no bearing on your construction company getting cheaper insurance with the NFU, they now insure 10000s of non farming businesses and private homes, they wouldn't be getting that work if they were convincing people they should become a NFU member to get cheaper insurance with them!

I suspect they are keen to get your non AG work so will give you a competitive quote,

They defo need to create a distance between the two!

The NFU point of contact for each member should be someone that doesn't work for the NFU mutual selling insurance!

You don't have much choice if you want to be insured ?

I know a farmer who owns 400ac and pays subs for that. He then rents a further 1500ac and it’s never been declared to the NFU for membership. He insures elsewhere. I’ve seen the annual invoice myself.

I have no issues or complaints with my local group secretaries but I do sometimes feel awkward asking them for help when I've just handed a chunk of insurance business to their opposition. To be fair they have never been unhelpful in any way, quite the opposite in fact. I almost feel guilty taking my business elsewhere but business is business and some of their quotes are miles out unfortunately.

Isn’t that why they created County Advisors?

Very few farmer members have any contact with them which is the problem.

They only speak to their local office, needs to be someone in each office that doesn't sell insurance but is out about meeting members on farm like the agents do.

Called personal touch.

That's my experience and I hear it from others all the time, why are they so far out so often?

You must pay your subs to be able to ask the secretary for help?
If you are a member then you are entitled to seek advice. If the mutual are too dear on their insurance then that is their fault, you have no need to feel guilty.
