Very clear to all that the NFU were pushing a very pro remain argument at all the talks/ meetings/ info they gave/ sent out.

I recall people posting on here at the time who had been to meetings at the NFU where MR/MB gave speech's and these posters were all shocked just how pro remain these speech's were!

Pehaps we need a reverse movement within the NFU, ie for example 90% of members are against RT/ farm assurance so this 90% should support RT, then the NFU will call for it to be scrapped as the 10% that clearly hold all the power would rather do that than be seen to be giving 90% of members any control in the union's policy's on anything.

You or the press can put what ever "spin" you lik on it the fact is if as an organisation you want to publish material that cost over 10k, that includes travel, texts, advert, research, meetings in fact everything you had to choose a side to sit on.
Its was decide, by the county teams, in touch with the grass root members, to instruct the council that remain was the status quo=no change.
I was in such a meeting and even the ones that were vote leave stated that sitting on the leave side would give out the signal that the NFU were instructing members to vote leave. Every meeting I attended it was explained to me that the NFU had to take a "side" but was publishing the facts.

Funny how the majority of those moaning about the NFU stance are ex and non members and had mostly had didn't attend meetings or see articles in NFU membership press.
You got what you wanted the leave vote. The decsion is made, less get on and make sure us as farmers, via the NFU, CLA,TFA etc show a united front making sure we get the best possible outcome for UK AG PLC!

Sid and Flasheart have explained this well but just to add a little.
In the spring of 2016 the NFU commissioned objective reports and analysis by third parties on the impact on agriculture of leaving the EU and held extensive member meetings where both sides of the referendum debate were invited to speak. The cost of all this (£70,000 +) triggered Electoral Commission rules where any organisation spending over £15000 had to declare how much had been spent and (bizarrely ) declare which side they were on. In April 2016 NFU council passed a motion that stated that the Leave scenario was more likely to be detrimental to the interests of agriculture than Remain but it also said the NFU would not be campaigning on either side in the run up to the referendum.
We did not contribute any funding to either the Remain or Leave campaign.
