I like this company, I want to stay with this company, but when their renewal quote is nearly 50% more than comparable quotes I'm going to struggle. I only have buildings and contents which started at £800 per year, since then I have accrued 30% no claims and I never even open the "renewal" letter as I know I'm in safe hands. Just twiddling my thumbs the other day and noticed my unopened renewal notice on my desk, I opened it out of boredom and bugger me I'm glad I did!!!! £1700 quid they wanted which include my 30% no claims! I had a quick call round and soon had two comparable quotes of £900. Even after I called and said they didn't have to match these quotes, and I would stay with them if they could at least get around that figure, they are still £400 out. Such a shame as I really do like this company.

While I'm on about "renewal notices" is anybody else sick of getting stung by massively inflated prices for being a loyal customer? case in point, the AA. Joined them a few years back, took the all singing all dancing policy for £150. Again, never bothered checking renewal price, until I noticed £300 leaving my account one January day. How can they double the price and expect to get away with it, except for people trusting them and not checking.

Might try this myself, pay a farmer £200 for his wheat one year, then only give him £100 for it the next year, errr hang on..........

You are a new customer. Within two years your quote will have gone up at least third ...if not more ...

Also heartly sick of the AA etc ...every service I buy i now get quotes for ...loyalty to some companies is a waste of time ...extremely depressing that a mutual like the nfu operates their business in this manner .

I used to work for oil distributor, once your loyal your hooked and paying over the odds. Same as insurance, you've just got to shop around each year else your shafted. I'm afraid loyalty does not pay:(
You have to move elsewhere for a year or two and then they ask if they can quote for your business, they win you back and it starts all over again.

When I got another quote for tractors it was half of NFU renewal price i.e. NFU were 100% dearer. Needless to say they didn't get it

As a slight defence of them the NFU Mutual have taken some big hits with flooding claims and the likes over the last few years, probably disproportionally bigger being a predominantly rural insurer than a lot of other companies. Having said that if you have to pay out and then lose customers following premium hikes it's unlikely to help in the longer term. There's never any harm putting a lot of pressure on them and if you're still not happy voting with your feet is the only way to go.

Just left a broker after 20 years mainly insured with NIG Farmweb, and a couple with a n other company (can't remember who) as NFU were £1K cheaper, for the same if not better cover.
Time will tell, but we will alert them to comparison quotes when the time comes.

Oil loyalty is lethal. Always phone 5 or 6 companies for every fill up, and sometimes save £100. It's always worth the calls.

I think that for machinery insurance they're worth sticking with because the service and reputation is good. Not many others want to insure LR Defenders either

But for buildings and houses etc. I 've always looked elsewhere because they're too dear. If I was a farmer in Scotland with a high chance of getting snow on the roof I would insure with them but I don't want to be the bloke subsidising that farmer in Scotland! Also don't live in a flood zone so the only issues for me are generally storm damage (which is a funny area to claim for anyway) and fire (and theft of course)

For Cars is companies like Admiral/ LG etc.

Its definitely worth checking each year. Vehicle insurance has gone up across the board this year I think though.

So I got a renewal notice also, but had already found a better deal, out od courtesy I rang and told them I would not be renewing.

First question "can I ask why"
Reply "too expensive"
Second question " have you spoken to anyone to see if we can do anything to reduce it"
That really gets me mad, "if you wanted the business the premium would be correct in the first place, you can't offer a quote and then decide to start knocking something off"
"well OK then"

But that's now the fourth vehicle they have lost in the last 2 years, and it's not as if they were anywere close, the last time I managed to speak to the secretary, who claimed they have no control over pricing, all they can do is follow what the big white chiefs decide is right.

I asked for a like for like quote from a rural insurer v the NFU, there was no internal damage cover, no cover for trailers etc when not hooked up, £10000 limit on implement value...........
When I said I wanted like for like that's what I wanted, not cheap and nasty they said no one else could offer that level of cover. But not everyone needs or wants bells and whistles cover. So horses for courses!

For oil, just see what An Gof paid and set as a target to beat;)

That's actually how we got involved. Insurance for a Freelander was quoted very competitively, and also saved the hassle of having trailers and vehicles having to have separate cover as the vehicle insurance only covered 3rd party on the trailer.
