Back on track,

Was in Ballymena today, and drove past, I might add, the retail park, which was full to the gills. Lots and lots of people will be packing December's shopping into a week. And lots of coffee meetings to be had too. I know I'll be taking this chance to meet up before cafes close again.

The PHA were bound to know this would happen. So I can't help but wonder if their model is to let people get their stuff done this week, have a spike in hospitalisations in the next couple of weeks, and then a levelling/decline by Christmas/new year.

I don't think any of them have a clue how to deal with the situation to be honest. I reckon there will be another week added onto the existing 2 weeks, then let rip until Christmas.

That would only leave four shopping days, seeing Christmas day is a Friday. Would be utter chaos. This week will be chaos as it is.

I do understand why they are trying to do this. But it creates dense pockets of pent up demand every time it's released.

I suppose they are hoping that the vaccine will be ready for the most vulnerable early in the new year which would hopefully ease the situation with lockdowns.

Four days is more than enough for me to get my Christmas shopping done!

Not talking conspiracy theories here, but I thought it was a tad unlikely that three major vaccine makers announced their results within days of each other, having from scratch invented, refined, produced, tested and reviewed the results of their individual products.

94% does sound rather optimistic. Mind you, if it's anywhere in that ball park, like >75%, it'll do the job.

My understanding is that this type of vaccine, an rna vaccine, is faster to develop than a traditional vaccine that uses a weakened form of the pathogen. Also, funding wasn't an issue with this vaccine as would usually be the case.
As for the release of results I'd say Pfizer releasing results had the same effect as seeing someone mowing 1st cut and whether others are ready or not they have to make a start.

The effectiveness figures will keep rising to ensure the share price keeps rising too, but like you say 75% will do the job.

Call for 'aligned' north-south Covid rules at Christmas

"Speaking to RTÉ, the Lagan Valley MP said there needed to be "better communication" between the Irish government and the Northern Ireland Executive about coronavirus, and the executive often first heard of decisions taken in Dublin "in the media".

He added: "How can the Northern Ireland Executive take account of what is happening in the republic if we don't know what is being planned in the republic?"

"There should be and can be co-operation."
