2018 NIAB Cabbage stem flea beetle survey

Please take part in our survey by following this link: https://app.maptionnaire.com/en/4861

After a year of relative respite from adult cabbage stem flea beetle grazing damage the effects of this pest now appear worse than ever.

We are conducting a new survey to monitor the spread and intensity of flea beetle infestations across the country. The survey is open from 8 October - 5 December 2018.

We would also like to take the opportunity to increase our understanding of damage levels and interactions with sowing date, establishment method, variety type and insecticide applications.

We want to hear from you if you have no damage at all, or any flea beetle effects, right through to crop write-off, or whether you have given up growing rape because of flea beetles. If you have tried re-drilling, we want to hear about that too.

Technical info: In this new format you are asked to zoom into the map and locate coloured response pins on your fields/farm and answer the brief survey. As soon as you have entered your data the map will come to life with all the pins entered up to that point and you can re-visit to see how the picture evolves as often as you like. You can even re-visit and edit your own entries, if you think that your crops have picked up or gone downhill significantly as the 2-month reporting period progresses.

The background survey asks for drilling date and whether this is a first drilling or a re-drilling. It also asks for variety type, whether you have used a companion crop or not, what cultivations you have used and how many insecticides you have applied. As a new feature there is a comments box where you can share other information on the crop situation at your site.

If you are not a NIAB TAG member but would like a copy of the report at the end of the survey period, please email the NIAB TAG Membership Office ([email protected]) with the subject “CSFB report request”. For information on how we use your data, please see our Privacy Policy at www.niab.com.

So, whether you have stopped growing rape, or have a perfect crop, a complete write-off, or anything in between, please go to the survey now. https://app.maptionnaire.com/en/4861

Thank you.

NIAB #CSFB survey shows 740 responses to date. The survey closes in 2 weeks, so please put your experience this season on the map. Full report available to everyone that gets involved.

The worst of the damage runs through the centre of the country, with East Anglia less badly hit than feared. We are interested in all good and problem crops please.

Cabbage stem flea beetle survey 2018 – final week! Please pin your results

We are really delighted by the response to our survey this year, with nearly 900 individual crop reports received to date, clearly reflecting the effects of the worst flea beetle season since the neonic ban in 2014.

The survey will close at the beginning of next week and then we will get stuck into the background data on sowing date, cultivations, variety type and insecticide usage. If you haven’t participated so far, please do. We’d love to hear from you. Even if you have no data of your own to add you can still visit the map to see what’s going on. Just click through to page 5 of the instructions, minimise the dialogue box and there is the map. You can even have a play with it by clicking on the little tile icon, top right, to filter the responses by damage levels reported.

Link to survey: https://app.maptionnaire.com/en/4861

When you go to the link you are asked to zoom into the map and locate coloured response pins on your fields/farm and answer the brief survey. As soon as you have entered your data the map will come to life with all the pins entered up to that point and you can re-visit to see how the picture evolves as often as you like.

So far, I think that the emerging story is that nowhere in the main UK cropping area is beyond the range of the cabbage stem flea beetle and even what appear to be perfect crops this year will turn out to be infested with larvae once we get into the New Year.

Very many thanks to all who have responded so far.
