Last summer /autumn we took a decision to drop all our big trees along road and lane , we had 2 down last winter and so worried one would Land on a car , we planted back beech , oak , cherry with a few red oaks and copper beech planted along lane for variety
We dropped 30 and put back 45 as said hopefully the next next generation will appreciate it

@Sussex Martin , do you know I don't think I have any photo's of them, I suppose they are something you take for granted as they are there. As they are copper beech I will have to take a photo when in full leaf to be able to appreciate them.

Thank you for pointing out the need to photo them.(y)

They were around 5ft high and have grown exceptionally well [for a change] if you are planting them along a road always put the same species both sides it looks far better, put another section in with Horse Chesnut on one side which spoil the effect of an avenue.
Don't plant them to close, and always plant what grows well in your area Oak I find is to slow Ash Elm Chesnut no use now I would only plamt Sycamore or Lime for avenues.I always think that a lot of farm access roads would be transformed with an avenue of trees.

Planted as whips 4 years ago, the White Poplar stand is just coming in to leaf and starting to look established

The Lombardy Poplars planted at the same time have really taken off (the small one in the foreground is a sucker that grew from a base where a horse ate the last one  - no longer a worry and fenced accordingly too)
