Nigel Farage, would we have voted to leave the EU without him ?

As above do folk think we would have had a vote never mind voting to leave if he had never had anything to do with UKIP or politics ?
Or was it on the cards anyway it just wouldn't have happened so quickly ?

He created the conditions for a vote and certainly connected with a disaffected portion of the population who hadn't voted previously.
So on the face of it no.
whether or not it would have happened at a slower pace anyway is a mute point.

Very much a 'marmite' politician.

I think he brought about conditions which made a referendum inevitable but I think the out vote was largely in spite of him, he may well have made some vote remain.

Agree with that. He sort of put me off but I still voted Leave. Far more important to me were the views of Owen, Lawson etc etc.

But I admire his persistence 100%. Have to say the press misrepresent Farage badly as they do other people. See a pic of Farage in the media and it's mouth wide open drinking a pint, see the Dutchess of Cambridge and it's all smiles and pleasantries. She also eats and drinks, but there are no photos with her mouth wide open!

David Owen?
Any link to his views, if so.

David Owen is worth listening to as are many older politicians. I believe he was on the case for Leave but not sure. There is little doubt that without Farage, this vote would not have happened. So, much as I can't warm to the chap, he is our modern day Cromwell (in some ways). He, in effect, did get us to the vote by opening up what is supposed to be a democracy and what happened was democracy in motion. So I think that's all good. That's what people died for. Not to let the self appointed clever people make all the decisions for everyone else. I can do diff calc and I voted Leave. How many Remainers can do diff calc? A stupid question with a stupid answer.

Dear Dave. Next time you are PM........

There are three ways in which a ruler can bring misfortune upon his army: By commanding the army to advance or to retreat, being ignorant of the fact that it cannot obey; This is called hobbling the army. By attempting to govern an army in the same way as he administers a kingdom, being ignorant of the conditions which obtain in an army; This causes restlessness in the soldier's minds. By employing the officers of his army without discrimination, through ignorance of the military principle of adaptation to circumstances. This shakes the confidence of the soldiers.

I was quite into politics and followed the sdp with interest. Used to love David Owen on question time and the like.
When the 2 David's failed so badly at (83?) election leading to the demise of the sdp and the merger to the lib dems or whatever they are called and "action man" as it's leader I sort of lost most interest

On another note. Paddy Ashdown. Supposed marine or something. Now I have all respect for the military and anyone who serves in them there but WTF? He comes across all SAS but I reckon he was reserve canteen duty. A British Marine has a sort of unspoken 'don't bother' about them. He doesn't have that at all. I question his military background but can't be arsed to investigate. I assume he's still munching on that hat.

Him becoming leader of the new party must be over 30 years ago now so he must be getting on.
I was surprised to see lord Owen is still taking an active interest. As you say was firmly out. Must have lost the plot with age:D
