Did any of you ever experience sleep paralysis? It would make any nightmare seem like a lullaby, pretty scary stuff. Last summer was the first time I experienced it.

my brother had it a couple of times a few weeks back, he said it was really scary.

There was a programe on radio 4 which tackled this issue amongst other sleep related issues and i think some of it was due to diet... Some of it genettics and other environment

picture yourself taking off over a familiar place, look down on familiar things, once you can do the familiar, you can take yourself anywhere
That is exactly one of my very regular dreams, being able to fly and almost always in familiar places. I quite often wonder if it's actually true as it is so realistic.

It is rare for me to have bad dreams but last Saturday night was one of those nights, no reason I can think of other than the cider I drank. Even my missus woke me to ask if I was alright, that is a first as it's usually me kicking her for snoring.

On the rare occasion I am having a dream I don't like I can tell I am dreaming and can stop it by opening my eyes. I know that sounds mad but it's true, and it works. Just didn't work on Saturday.
Quite often when I nod off I know I have fallen asleep because I start dreaming. Dreams are better than the telly anyday. :D

It was always a pleasant dream of mine too as a child, but discovering you are able to tap into this space at will was a revelation. It did not take long to master.

At the risk of hijacking a thread, how do you meditate?

Is it all in the breathing, or 'mindfulness', or finding quiet time to sort through the piles of stuff taking up 'headspace'?

Genuine question.
Mostly mindfulness and the ability to just wind down the wild jumble to just one thing.. The dripping of a tap, your breathing, clock....

This will better explain, there are a few different techniques that focus on different things. (y)

Here's a question... Does stress cause really horrible nightmares? Last night I woke up from a horrific one. It was about my elder brother, I dreamt someone murdered him and the grief just consumed me. As of late these nightmares have become frequent and I end up waking about 6-7am instead of 8:30 in a bit of panic, heart really beating very fast and cold sweats. Can anyone recommend what I can do to get rid of these unwanted and frankly scary dreams? They say it's usually because of an unsettled mind, which is true ATM.

Any help:

Always puzzles me when people say 'sweet dreams'. Never had a sweet dream in my life that I can remember. Mrs Y had to wake me up at 1am this morning 'cos I was in the throes of an entrapment nightmare.
I once dreamt that I married Kylie Minogue. While doing some shopping on honeymoon we met my wife. She did not seem bothered by our betrothal.
Sometimes if having a nice dream and I wake up I can get back to sleep and carry it on.

Around about 25 years ago I wanted to stop smoking and bought a stop smoking CD, it was based on hypnotherapy, I never ever found out what came after " imagine a vivid blue triangle " as I always fell asleep :rolleyes:, maybe something similar would help you to relax, obviously one meant for relaxation.

I got one similar from the police. They were handing them out at a service station! It puts you to sleep for 20 minutes then wakes you up, it's brilliant. (It does say on it not to play it while you're moving!)

Thanks for all the replies guys, I didn't think this thread would generate this much positive feedback  last night I didn't have any nightmares at all, which is excellent :) I think part of it was to do with doing more work in a day than I usually do... Idle minds never did anyone any good. Hope everyone else is ok? Will have a look at those links soon! (y)

I haven't woken up from a memorable dream in about 20 years.
Used to have the same dreams and terrible nightmares as a kid, night after night .
Then they suddenly just ceased.. I know I sound pushy but for all the stick you get for trying stuff like yoga and meditation etc I believe there's much more to life than being worried depressed or medicated (and I have the T shirts, believe me)
Sometimes diet or circumstance can definitely affect your dreams and subconscious but you can be master of it.

All the best - keep us posted (y)

Stress. And overactive mind. If you have read the book "Lathe of Heaven" (and I would, it is great. RIP Ursula K LeGuin) then thats how I dream. I have had lucid dreams since I was about 10. I currently use diazepam to block them - absolutely no dreams so long as you get the dose right and it wears off not too long before getting up time.

Quite often will wake myself up due to the sound of my own screaming in my dreams. Just the way some people are.

Nightmares always follow certain types in my experience.

Sitting in maths a level exam having done no revision. I still have nightmares about exams years later. It's stupid but it happens.

Late for the job interview because get lost trying the find the venue.

Lost the car in the carpark. (This has started happening in real life!)

Fall off a cliff or ladder and wake up with a jolt as I "hit the ground".

The cattle escaping. When I was a lad they often used to escape at night and we would all be out there in the dark getting them back in. Dad in front with a bag of feed leading them and the rest of us moving on stragglers. The first thing you knew about it was you would be lying in bed and you would awake to the sound of them trashing the garden, rubbing their horns on the trees and bealing. It's a nightmare because I worry I can't them back in, not because they scare me.

Getting knocked down by a sheep, bizarrely, probably because it happened to me a few times as a toddler and gave me nightmares then.

I was frightened that the fox would get me when I was as a child as it used to get the hens and I wasn't much bigger. Then one day dad shot one from the top window with his rifle when it was taking the hens during the day, and seeing it dead it lost it all its terror. I secretly felt sorry for it.

I had a terrible fear of aircraft noise as a child due to a Vulcan bomber going straight up right over the place where I was sat out in my pram one day. Being under the flight path of RAF Binbrook didn't help with lightnings coming in in pairs with their air brakes squealing most nights. Anyway, I got over it, but still feel a slight irrational fear when hear a rumble of aircraft noise.

The rubbish and baggage we carry with us. Best just dump it and forget it.

I once dreamt that I got off the tractor to open a gate and it rolled back through a wall into a woman's vegetable garden. I promised to make good all the damage.

Next morning my wife looked out and asked me where I had left the pickup- at the door as usual I replied. But it had rolled back 20 yards over a bank and stuck against some bushes.

How scary was that!!

Used to sleep on my back. Often had the nightmare that I was falling backwards, hurtling earthwards in this position - unable to do anything about it, paralysed with fear and unable to roll into a position to soften any landing. Sometimes it used to wake me as I landed - actually feeling the bump of landing back on the bed.

Recurring nightmare currently is that one of base humanity, a veritable traitor to our realm, gets into power at the next election - espescially the bit at Glastonbury where - aided by another millionaire - he told the thousands of very bright but oh so worldly unwise assembled there, most of whom had paid several hundred pounds to be there - that capitalism was not working for them.

Another nightmare for someone was clearing up after the buggers. Gates should be locked to keep the buggers in until they had cleaned up.

Another recurring nightmare is us, the common 5/8 after dragging ourselves out of a hole all our lives - will have the communist dream to pay for.

I sometimes have extremely vivid dreams as opposed to nightmares.
I dreamt once that I was at a wedding that had been organised by my sister, or at least she had had some involvement in it because I could feel her presence there.
At the wedding was a cousin of mine and he nodded to me to acknowledge me , as if to say he was all right.
Both had dies within a few weeks of one another shortly before the dream.
I didn't feel threatened at all, quite reassured in some ways.
