Nimco Ali's ideas...

Should staring at people, or whistling result in an immediate criminal record and fine?

I am often caught just 'staring' into the distance. It must be a female thing as my daughter has reprimanded me on more than one occasion for 'staring' at folk when in fact I was just acting 'Pretty Vacant'. But she was very tetchy about it. Odd creatures females!

Crumbs, I thought you had changed sex for a moment.

It all depends on context. You are on the late bus going home from work, you are the only passenger until, two stops from home, someone gets on. They sit between you and the exit. They don’t sit back in their seat but sit at right-angles, with their legs stretched out across the aisle.
They don’t say a word, don’t move or gesture, they just stare, and they make sure you know they are staring. Your stop is next, you have to walk past this person who is almost blocking your exit, and appears to be deliberately trying to intimidate you. How do you feel? All they are doing is staring.
That is downright rude and intimidating behaviour whether you are male or femaile. There may or may not be violent intent but it shows lack of respect at least.

What about charging the Fe*****rs at Norwich livestock market for shouting abuse then who are harrassing people going about their business
I posted on the thread about Norwich market that most of the time when I took stock to market,( not Norwich, elsewhere), I was on my own.
The police at Norwich would expect me , a lone woman, to stop and be subjected to what amounts to abuse and intimidation whilst they stood by and did nothing.
If Nimco Ali’s ideas become law, if I got out of my pick-up and walked down the road and somebody wolf-whistled at me, the same police should issue an on the spot fine and the silly beggar would get a criminal record as well, (whether his guide dog would be tarred with the same brush, I don’t know).

There is a huge difference between could and would. In the unlikely event that there was a cop present he would either ignore it and pretend not to hear it or say that he could not be sure who whistled. If he did intervene and issue a fixed penalty notice the recipient woulsd probably refuse to pay or contest the fine and so on and so on. There must be thousands of actual assault cases and physical/mental abuse cases that never see the light of day unless of course the abused can bring a civil action. Heard/Depp and Vardy/Rooney spring to mind but no ordinary person could afford to bring or defend in such cases. The Wags case is estimated to have cost £4 million toadjudicate on a bit of image bashing which nobody really cares about or even knew about until these two rich dim wmen decided make a public spectacle of themselves.

It cannot be presumed anyone is telling the truth in a criminal matter. Least of all MPs. I do understand what you are saying and personally I don’t think there is a need for new laws. However misogynistic attitudes are a problem and I can’t see how that can change without such attitudes being “called out” for want of a better phrase. False accusations are very damaging so maybe men will have to become more cautious about the situations they put themselves in? Something women have had to consider for many centuries.
I agree with most of that, but not the bit about caution for women. I'd rather that women didn't have to be cautious than that men need to start being so.

Men stare pointlessly into the distance, while women talk on inanely, it is the way of things. (y)
