nitrogen application

Have always used double top here to allow use of a cheaper alternative at a later date ,,,,,,, urea or Lithan
But I'm considering making life a bit easier and buying single top next year for the little but often approach to sulphur application

HGCA note on sulphur requirements in crops:

The rates above have been revised upwards a little in all crop recently, but this is a good guide for totals.

I can see a difference since last Friday . Evident by one tramline that didn’t get any, due to a blowing drain along it.

How many people are still going on with just straight N as the first application rather than going with an NS grade ?

Urea/Sulphur fert hasn't arrived yet . Went straight urea on barley as it needed a pick up.
If I sling on straight urea onto ww, then I will have to wait til April before going with the sulphur
Osr is forward so no panic, probably needs sulphur more than N at mo, so that has been left as well

Here is an interesting article from Farmers Weekly, a couple of weeks old now but still relevant advice for those worried about too much early biomass going into a potential drought situation.

https://www.fwi.co.uk/arable/crop-m...ogen-to-cereal-early-can-mitigate-dry-summers

We're growing grain or oil, not silage. I'll bet that after a good growing season and some flat crops the advice in FW might be more cautious... Having said that, YEN work does say that higher biomass does go hand in hand with the best yields. It might improve the sales of PGRs later on. So hard to tell this early. My crops are growing in this weather, so I'm feeding them.

So what are peoples thoughts now, its certainly cooled down again up here and looks like there could be a couple of frosts coming later this week

We decided to farm to the season, and although we don't have a crystal ball, crops were growing in mid Feb. Applied between 60-80 kg N/ha depending on field. Our crops have been romping away.

Neighbour put his N on at end of Feb. Currently his crops look hungry. I think they were trying to grow due to the sunshine, but didn't have the N available to sustain its requirement.

Just hope we haven't over cooked ours. Was out with the growth reg last week :banghead:

Currently very happy with our decision.

We put some on, winter barley doesn't know whats happening. 16c last week, white with frost today. Put 3l/ha of manganese sulphate on too.

Its looking stressed.

Crops are romping away here , barley is plastered in mildew but plan on giving it a T 0 end of next week , needs some growth reg and mang so will give it something to help take some of the mildew pressure off
