nitrogen application

There are agronomy models for OSR and wheat that decide the amounts based on the SAR and NDVI - I believe they work on higher rates from lower biomass in early applications and then lower rates later on but @Rhiza-UK would be able to answer that better and in more detail than me

We use a range of data to help determine N rates: on-farm experience and target yields, GAI levels (from SAR radar data or in-field observations recorded on our Contour Mobile app), NMIN results if available and soil type. All this is fed into known agronomic models to help determine the range of N to apply (ie min, max and target rates). Optical satellite imagery is then used to distribute N to where it is most needed - feeding the thinner areas with more early on, then targeting the highest yield potential areas later.

Right, the armour plated tin hat is on.

Is anyone thinking about or even going with second dose yet.

Where my osr hasn't been grazed by pigeons it's knee high and won't be that long before it's getting to tall for the spinner so will need doing within a fortnight.
My cereals are romping away but have got 70 units under them and arnt taking any harm for a while but I did see a neighbour doing N2 today but admittedly I don't think he put much on early because his barley was still yellow and hungry looking.

Yep finishing osr this week as it’s nearly to tall, also just finished winter barley today. No rain forecast for a while and want to keep it going.

Yep, spreader back on this afternoon to put 2nd dose of N on OSR this week using Singletop, 1st dose was 60kg N/ha nearly 4 weeks ago using Actyva S (16-15-15 6.5So3).
Might do some of the W Barley for its 2nd dose as well, while waiting for land to dry out to carry on drilling, which is a mix of Singletop on some and liquid N & S on the rest. Wheat had its first dose split (was going to be 60kg N/ha but went 40kg N/ ha and saved 20kg N/ha for now) so it will get the 2nd half of that split to use up the remaining Actyva S. Proper 2nd split of N on wheat will probably be 2-3 weeks and is liquid N & S.

Will that be the 2nd and final dose on the winter barley or are you growing hybrid and using a 3 way split.

Like we always hear in a cold late year, don’t go by calendar date but by conditions at the time. Well this year for me around here it’s early and so I’m treating it as such.

2nd of 3 doses, 3rd will be all liquid N & S on the whole area, its KWS Orwell feed barley. Total will be 180kg N/ha overall. Basically 60kg N/ha per split. Its in 3 splits due to 3 different products.

I'm still waiting for first go. We already had the most rain in march in 41 years, and more is on the way. 108mm national average so far - worst areas over 150mm. No travel anywhere in at least another week.

Second dose on the osr tomorrow, then will carry on with the second of three splits on the barley, first wheats will get there first dose this week and second wheats will get there second dose next week.

2nd dose of N on WW going on this week.

Had 55kgN/ha as a fist dose, will have 100kgN/ha as N2.

As mentioned, on my limestone brash shallow soils, all N will be on by the end of this month.
Its the only way to get the tiller numbers and green area needed.

With every plant limited to how much N it can take up per day, putting it all on earlier will decrease your N efficiency through ammonia losses to the atmosphere and soil leaching.

However if the forecast remains steady and the soil temperatures are appropriate I would say it’s a discussion worth having. Depends on your risk perspective.
