Had a bloke here today from Harvey Communications trying to sell integrated office phone systems / broadband etc. He claimed that anyone in a fibre area would have to use VOIP via fibre from January 2020 onwards for phone calls as the existing copper network will be disconnected. Anyone know anything about this or is it bullsh*t?

Thanks in advance

I know of three or maybe four people who no longer use a landline phone and only use mobiles, although only one in a business environment, and quite a few who keep thinking to do so, this might move that along a bit quicker now.

I think they’re champing at the bit to get rid of the copper network where they possibly can. It costs them an absolute fortune in maintenance and upkeep.

Nothing wrong with VoIP - the core BT network and all international circuits have been transferring voice calls for several decades using ones and zeros - it’s just the “access” network that needs to be brought up to date.

They certainly haven’t advertised it very well if it is going to be shut down in Jan 20. There’ll be lots of businesses / houses rushing to get connections sorted at the last minute

I have had a mobile only for about 5 years now.
Line of sight broadband.
Costs less and is better.
Got fed up of the line rental.
And the half Meg bb.
Now got 25meg.

From the article;

“Openreach also plans to pass three million homes and businesses with fibre-to-the-premise by 2020”

I’ll have to search out how many premises they have “passed” with fibre to date, but I stil find that an incredibly optimistic date, or maybe their definition of premises passed <> premises that could be connected, easily at least.

"Plans to pass" - does that mean they'll be driving past 3mil homes whilst connecting about half a dozen?

Interesting that that article states it's BT who's leading the push !! Part of the attraction surely going to fibre / VOIP is to get a commercial alternative to the strangehold that BT has over the final piece of copper ????

Even in a really poor mobile service area at home, I could probably cope without a landline but my cameras with remote access depend on the internet etc.

No sport or any frills and my BT bill is always over £70 / month - £840 / yr is one calf just to pay for that

?!!

How come? That's massive.

I've asked around at work and most people say they pay about the same

Mid range GB data plus daytime calls etc. I'm out of contract and I've asked the customer service monkeys and whatever I say I can do without doesn't save me much . Advice welcome !

Apart from calls to my elderly parents, I wouldn't say I use my landline for calls much. I have no mb signal and with EPA for my Aunt, cattle potentially getting out and the need for internet for browsing and my camera, I'd gladly tell them to poke it

With BT backtracking on all the promises they have made to the folk down our road "FTTP by autumn 2018 "
Just been in touch with https://www.airnexus.co.uk/
Thought their main mast was out of sight of us, but it seems they have a booster at the same site as the local EE mast so good line of sight. - Yippee
They say the current problem is a "world shortage of suitable equipment " to install a service.- Bugger

It’s funny I’ve heard similar stories from some equipment suppliers, with stock shortages going into October - certainly on some wireless equipment and particularly affecting the type of kit that wireless ISPs (WISPs) use.

Apparently there’s also a global DRAM shortage at the moment, with prices going nuts. Who knew.
