21m homes have gas.
4m customers have had their supplier shut / administration after today's announcement.

Six months and how many will be left without removing the price cap?

Don't use gas so...

Nor I.

Although I found it annoying that the only way to get an elevtric car tarrif was to sign up to electric and gas from the same supplier. No mains gas here.

Govt can scrap the price cap or end up pseudo nationalising them and supplying subsidised gas. Sigh.

The liberalisation of the energy markets and allowing new suppliers to enter the scene has worked very well for many .
I personally have benefitted massively over the last few years, probably paying under half for my energy compared to many I know. However when as these suppliers have been doing buying and selling on the day market, there comes a time when they get caught, offering fixed price contracts when they have no guaranteed supply for the next 12 months is extremely risky and one wonders why the regulators have not raised the alarm long ago. Perhaps they did, but nobody listened.
There is also little doubt that some of these operators have been operating close to fraudulently , some having taken out large salaries / dividends against companies which have operated on a near zero profits.
Price caps on the big operators means that all those customers who benefited from cheap prices will have to be subsidised in the future by those long suffering customers who stuck with the big six for many expensive years

Perhaps they shouldn't be allowed to sell what they don't have

An awful lot of these new players used the "green" message as a way of attracting new customers, interesting to see that the vast majority of the ones that have gone under are those very same "green" companies!

But dont all futures market work on this premise?
Yep but if you sell something that you haven't got then you are in the sh!t when the buying price goes up, only they are not are they, probably walk away worth a fortune. So perhaps they shouldn't be allowed to sell something you haven't got

I would agree to an extent, it always struck me as a very strange law, that allows company directors to milk a company for all it is worth, then walk away leaving it, employees and customers in the sh*t.
I know that several of these smaller suppliers are guilty of this, but not sure about Bulb as I have not looked that closely.

Et voilà. £2bn subsidy to keep them trading until the cap is removed. Similar in size to our now reduced Bps. Can't have the public cold in winter. Let's see if they do the same to keep them in turkeys and roast potatoes.
Mmmmm These tossers have been drawing huge salaries and dividends whilst selling stuff they don't own. Not that they are criminals or owt.

The £2 billion only keeps them going until the end of April 🙄🙄

Many farmers sell crops forward, it is to an extent the same. If the farmer is farming as a company, then he can walk away from that company if he has crop failure, and keep his farm , if he has not put it as security against that company.
If they have done it as part of a deliberate fraud then they can go to jail, the problem here in the UK we have a system which completely fails to prosecute and jail these rogue directors.
Elsewhere on this forum, we are debating the rights and wrongs of the American legal system, I would suggest that fraud is one thing they get a lot more right than we do, with rogue operators facing and often receiving vast sentences

Number of bankers imprisoned post-2007?

Number of profiteers and govt contractees raking it in during covid who won't get prosecuted?

Resources spent on chasing benefits "cheats" who get something wrong on a form deliberately designed to be difficult, by people who are likely to have issues when it comes to literacy and numeracy?

Welcome to Bent Britain, the money laundering centre of the world (https://www.cityam.com/criminal-cas...erg-in-money-laundering-capital-of-the-world/) where we cheer folk who raid pension funds; dubious folk who buy glfootball clubs; and those who take huge payments out then shut down ltd companies.

This is a result of the government carving up the gas/energy sector. Companies making millions acting as middle men and then disappearing into the night when low and behold, the market has a big ripple that absolutely no one could have predicted* and 'shouldn't have happened because of the investment in renewables'*.
