No need for a trailer test anymore?

Another option that would help free up DVSA examiner resource to conduct vocational tests would be to consider removing the requirement for car drivers to take a B+E test (car and trailer) if they want to tow a trailer. DVSA currently conducts 30,000 B+E (car and trailer) tests a year. We have seen a steady increase in volumes during the pandemic as the public has adopted caravanning as an alternative to holidays abroad.

no, its the examiners they are short of! this is to try and get them out of the driver shortage crisis
Surely this is what the entire thread is about, all car licence holders will gain the right to tow a trailer up to 3500kg from later this year, all tests for BE cease from September 20th

Yes plus they’ve done away with class 2. A real kick in teeth for those of us paid for it. I know lads that have done trailer tests and class 2 in the last month 🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈

I'm not entirely certain what they hope to achieve tbh. It isn't goin to make lorry driving much more attractive and i'll bet the training firms will up the cost significantly to cover their costs, particularly now they've all got rigid lorries parked up as paperweights, it's a bit gauling having paid for my trailer test, but thats life.

aim would be to clear the backlog of exams quicker and thus get m ore hgv drivers.

Wow I'm kind of happy sad with this, it's always bugged me that I think I know what im doing and tbh probably know more and more abley handle a trailer than most eligible users. But theres always the unknown regs that nobody looks for and are only taught

If it's because they want more lorry drivers why don't they upgrade the trailer lisence for everyone who already has one to a class 2 license. It would be fair for everyone then and they would get a lot of extra drivers really quickly.
How about anyone who has driven a Fendt and a bale trailer with 4 courses of bales gets the full artic license? ;)
