I think its good and bad news alot of people cant drive their car never mind drive it with a trailer, but on the other hand alot of young farmers are towing nearly 20 ton about on a tractor and cant tow more than 750kg behind a car.

What will change later in 2021​

The law is going to change later in 2021. It will mean that if you passed your car driving test from 1 January 1997, you’ll be allowed to tow trailers up to 3,500kg MAM without taking a car and trailer driving test.

Car and trailer driving tests are stopping ahead of the law changing. This means you can no longer book or take a car and trailer driving test from 20 September 2021. However, the law will not change until later in autumn 2021.

This is very welcome news, and hopefully makes the obfuscated rules about towing trailers & weights much simpler.

The times Ive backed a trailer onto narrow drives and the customers have said ,,well my hubby cant back his little trailer at the skip site ,,well no ,,because your hubby hasnt been doing it for the last 45 years like I have .
Its going to look like the episode of top gear when they towed a caravan ,,a right fiasco

Nothing worse than a little trailer though. I dont think alot of people realise it 10x easier reversing a 30ft trailer compared to a 5ft one.

I’ve got an apprentice, he’s booked to do his course and test on Monday.

Training provider phoned today asking if wanted to cancel. We decided to leave it as is and for him to do the course and test. We got a training fund for him to use, so it’s no skin off our nose, but also I can’t see a negative with him doing it.

If he does it, he has a record of official training, so if something happens down the line, I’ve shown due diligence as an employer and the guy is trained to a standard.

I think there will be insurance companies looking at this in horror, and fair chance THEY will be the ones who keep the training providers in business with certificates of competence.

My 14ft Ifor is loads easier to reverse on my l200 compared to a little quad bike trailer

I wouldn’t agree with that. There’s a hell of a lot of people who need to tow a trailer, not just farmers, but any builders need a trailer or to tow diggers etc, Young families with caravans, people with garage business with recovery sidelines, car dealerships. There’s massive need for trailers out there and most will have under 40 year old employees.
