No need for a trailer test anymore?

I bet most caravanists haven’t bothered to do a test anyway
Most of us are…..ahem…..a certain age so not to have to.😂
The technology is already near where a vehicle and trailer can be safely reversed without touching the steering wheel using a scroll wheel and camera to prevent any jackknifing. Have it on our disco although haven’t ever used it

I have also known of a Renault Master 3500 van getting checked in Edinburgh with a Gross Weight of over 5500 kg.

Maybe those scenarios are acceptable to you ?

I know of a Lwb Hi top Master giving it 8800 over a weighbridge.

It's those flip flop 3.5t Tilts the hotshotters use they need to sort out Over 3.5t unladen with helper springs so she won't squat.

Perhaps anyone that has failed the test shouldn't be allowed to tow a trailer.

Know of someone that has failed their tractor test 🙄
I failed my first tractor test at 16, apparently i should a been looking at the front of the tractor when reversing round a corner,. passed car and class 1 tests first time.

Those foreign plated 3.5t curtainsiders with the sleep pods always look well dodgy to me. They seem to have a minimum speed of 90mph as well.

My OH did the course and test in January this year, I have since been making noises about the money we could have saved and how they should compensate her. but she disagrees, says the experience and confidence it gave her was well worth the money and she is a better driver for it.

Most probably not! We’ve been out a lot with ours this year and it’s shocking that most cant reverse them any where near their own pitch! They either drop them off in a no mans land and use motor movers or the worse thing I see is a caravan landing and hoards of other caravaners running there to push the thing onto its pitch as if it was a normal acceptable situation.

I’ve come to the conclusion now that they’re starting to look down on us because we just pull in rather sharpish, squeeze past to get to pitch, throw the thing around to get it pointing right way and reverse on pitch!!! Had one ask how I could reverse a caravan, seemed bewildered when I explained that you may have to reverse a silage trailer hundreds of times around every object achievable on most farms!!!

On holiday once up Pitlochry, we were walking past a caravan park and heard a lot of revving and wheel spinning. Went and had a look over the dyke and there was a chap with a big merc motorhome trying to get it levelled out on the sloping pitch. He had little chock things to get the front raised. Well, did he not have them on the high side and trying to reverse up onto them instead of acessing his spot from the path above and letting gravity take him down onto them. It was quite greasy, bloke was making a right mess. 🤦‍♂️

Watched him struggle on for another ten mins then we left. Made a proper mess by then.

if hadn’t been stuck behind a convoy of the beggars travelling at 20mph the day before, then maybe would’ve helped.

40ish years ago my Dad used my Britains tractor and trailer on the kitchen table to explain to the new, 16 year old YTS students which way to steer to reverse around the corner.
Once they could reverse the toy into the gap between knife and fork they could have a go on the real thing.
I propose a similar table top test to get your caravan / trailer license. ;)

My daughter will do just this, 8 miles to the nearest Costa and the younger generation wonders where the money goes.
One large jar of Nescafe will hardly buy 2 cups at Costa
I just can’t get over the amount of drive thru coffee places. I bet there’s folk who will walk thru the kitchen, past the kettle, get in the car, drive to one of these places, drive home, and drink their bought coffee 3ft from their own kettle.
But we all lead such busy lives now. I see tradesmen driving past us each morning with the coffee up on the dash and I know some who will drive back to the sandwich shop for their lunch.
£20 a week in coffee alone.
£1000 a year😦

I sent link to son, on harvest student work at moment, he replied with 'whoop de doo' and sent pic of his Magnum tractor and Richard Western trailer.
Seriously, it will have saved us £400 plus. He tried to get it for last 2 years at college but all courses were booked solid. Who's laughing now? :)

My missus always makes me a pack lunch for I go out in the mornings & makes sure I have some breakfast to, maybe it’s because she doesn’t want me coming back in with muddy boots!!! 😂, I’ve seen these young lads stopping at our local garage in the mornings getting there curled up sandwiches & their excuse for a coffee, then complaining to there mates because they’ve run out of money before payday!!!

If you can reverse your cattle box onto the narrow bloody docks at Longtown mart where the cafe overlooks the docks, then a caravan is a piece of pi*s.
