No need for a trailer test anymore?

You've led a charmed life and been lucky then -

It is quite possible to be involved in a no-fault collision ( e.g. Head on collision due to blow out on other person's vehicle)

If your licences are not up to date and correct then the insurance will simlpy decline any claim no matter how many years you have been paying it and how many £1000's you have paid.

Motor Insurance is mandatory for a reason - it is not simply "Red Tape".
I’m not boasting, fact is 3.5t towing law has always been a load of money making bollox!
My brother passed his test a year before me and can tow legally but I couldn’t yet he’d sooner get me to tow as I do it all the time and more confident.

Don’t know why people keep telling me, I KNEW THE LEGALITYS, it was my choice to ignore them, I obviously had no Idea how to tow safely after 23 incident free years! yes I’m selfish, but move along people the law has changed, I’m now insured so you can sleep at night now 👍🏼

You're not legal yet law hasn't changed yet and no announcement on exactly when only says later in 2021. The only change so far is no car and trailer tests after 20th sept.

Surly if the stop the test from the 20th it makes sense to go from there? Otherwise they’re just creating even more of a backlog!

Most probably not! We’ve been out a lot with ours this year and it’s shocking that most cant reverse them any where near their own pitch! They either drop them off in a no mans land and use motor movers or the worse thing I see is a caravan landing and hoards of other caravaners running there to push the thing onto its pitch as if it was a normal acceptable situation.

I’ve come to the conclusion now that they’re starting to look down on us because we just pull in rather sharpish, squeeze past to get to pitch, throw the thing around to get it pointing right way and reverse on pitch!!! Had one ask how I could reverse a caravan, seemed bewildered when I explained that you may have to reverse a silage trailer hundreds of times around every object achievable on most farms!!!
Just tell them that some people are born with a superior ability and that there's no hope for the others, who should be pitied rather than despised.

What was stupid was that anyone who passed there test before July 1997 was presumed to be more competent at towing than someone who passed in August of the same year 🤦🏻‍♂️. It was clear at the time it was a money making jobs for the boys exercise and the fact they’ve just done away with it confirms as much.
If they want to change something that would be more constructive they should make motorway driving part of the test, and have more emphasis on lane discipline.

Your right it was January -

Licences issued from 1 January 1997

If you passed your car driving test on or after 1 January 1997 you can:

  • drive a car or van up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass (MAM) towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM
  • tow a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as the combined MAM of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg

I don't think it was that they were deemed more competent but that towing trailers at the 3.5 ton limit became a lot more common. How many were towing 3.5 ton regularly and with a vehicle capable of getting it to the speed limit never mind over it prior to 1990?

So why did you bother sitting your car license?

You are/were clearly happy to drive illegally

Ok, so all you having a go at me have never, EVER broken any road regulations? Speeding, failing to stop at a stop sign, try to beet traffic lights, vehicle 100% legal all the time? If you’ve NEVER broke the law on the road fair enough but personally I think anyone having a go at me will be nothing more than a self righteous hypocrite! Only difference is I’ll admit I know I’m doing something wrong, I see farmers flaunting the law every day out on the road, pleading ignorance isn’t a defence.
