No rear lift-Massey 50 industrial

Evening guys. I'm seeking a bit of assistance with my winter project. It's a MF 50e industrial loader with rear 3pt linkage and pickup hitch.

I've got the cab off to gain access to the top cover and back end as there is no life about the linkage.
What is the best way to go about fault finding the hydraulics? Mechanically minded but no experience when it comes to
Massey hydraulics. Assume the top cover will need removed to see what's going on inside but any pointers welcomed.

Have you had the cover off/ worked on any of it/ has anyone recently? Years ago I fitted a replacement hydraulic pump to a 590. There was a sliding coupler that transmitted drive to the pump/ back end. I put the coupler on the wrong way round and had exactly the same symptoms. Cover off and reverse the sleeve sorted it.

On certain age of MF they had a stupid jubilee clip that held the draft control lever going into lift cover could sometimes slip upsetting the lift. Is the PTO turning

Pto is turning yes-will have a look where the linkages go into the shaft extending from the top cover

No there's been no activity on the back end of the machine at all-doubt it's ever had the cover off going by the unbroken paintwork. Sounds like the cover needs to come off for a look inside. Any pointers for removing the top cover? Anything I need to watch for?

To remove lift cover you first need to remove the right side cover and remove the roller between the legs of the control valve actuator but before removing roller try the leavers on quadrant and see if they move the legs . If quadrant doesnt move legs start engine and carefully try and move by hand and see if lift responds
If you haven't used the lift for a while it sounds as if the control valve will be stuck.
Lower the level of oil in back end a bit before you do anything as it will come out some of the removed stud holes.

Thanks for your advice, had a play this afternoon, once i had all the loader hydraulics out the way I got the side over off and had a look. One of the levers inside seemed to be stuck forward-assuming from lack of use so clicked it back and fired it up,messed about with the linkages for the position and draught for a bit, nothing happening. Oil looked nasty so dropped it and gave the filter a blast although it was clean enough and topped it back up again. Another play at the linkages with the engine at tickover for a bit and got oil coming out of the tipping pipe then linkage raised to full height. Pump is now giving plenty pressure(about 2600psi) out the tipping pipe but the problem now is the linkage is at full height and seems totally solid. No amount of different combinations seems to lower the arms. Hope it hasnt overstroked the ram-is that a possibility?

The control valve may be stuck ? Is the tractor pumping against itself ?

Got a gauge on the tipping pipe which pressurises and then relaxes as the linkage is moved through its positions,tractor only changes note as you would expect once full pressure has been reached and starts blowing the relief so I can only assume that at least some of the system is working as it should

The lever that was stuck forward is the control valve.
It's 20 years ago since I owned a 165. That happened it. I removed the top cover , took it to a local MF "specialist , who removed the control valve and fitted a new valve. He reckoned it wasn't worth messing . I can't remember now , but don't think it cost much. Maybe 50 odd ? I think it was in 1991 so memory is vague...

If the pressure eases with lever movement fair chance its just the cross shaft a bit tight through lack of use, can you add a weight to lift arms and see if it will force down.

Had another play this afternoon-set the linkage into the top cover where I thought lower should be and gave the arms a gentle persuasion with a copper hammer and got them all the way to the bottom with a good few blows. Seems to be raising ok now, a bit juddery though but always too tight to lower itself. Away out now to put some real weight on the back now it's back on wheels and out the shed to see if things slacken off with a bit of work lifting and lowering a concrete block.

there may well be plugs on the cross shaft bushings that you can remove and replace with grease nipples. most massey top covers off that age have them
