Hi folks, I was wondering has any one experience of an International 785 tractor not going into reverse - it goes forward when put in reverse. No bang or anything just happened overnight - literally. It's got one High Low gear lever on the side and a shuttle forward (3) and reverse up on the panel. It serves me well but mechanic think it something to do with the Packs. He mentioned a torque amplifier too - thinks its a big job, anyone throw any light on the subject please thanks I not sure of the year its an English B reg

Is it a Hydro model then as opposed to a synchro mesh transmission if only low and high? No 1-4 gear lever? If it’s a hydro, should be badged a Hydro 85 It won’t have torque amplifier but any firm of fault in the splitter would not stop it going backwards.

Any photos?

if it is a shuttle gearbox it has punched holes in the reverse pack . Needs split to renew packs.

Thanks J but it is a fairly old tractor - it only had one speed in reverse methinks (that word 'split' sure doesn't sound appealing:cool:

Thanks Sharpy i might be out of my depth here but he drove it up a hill and the clutch wasn't slipping - tractor had good power - he said that was good - he thinks oil not getting back to the packs (at least i can go forward - I just need to plan my escape routes

That if I’m not mistaken is a hydro transmission. How are you driving it? It’s not just a shuttle lever but you should use it to increase the driving speed. Push it slightly into forward and drive off pushing it further forward to increase the speed. The clutch pedal is only an itching pedal, not a clutch. Why it is stuck in forward I’m not sure though.

That is a hydro transmission so it's a Hydro 85.
If forward is working normally it should be a fixable fault in as much as it would be very unusual for this sort of problem to a huge internal issue.
I have to say though you absolutely need a mechanic with knowledge of this unique transmission.
For a start there are no clutch packs in a hydrostatic transmission.
I wouldn't be surprised if it happened suddenly if the reverse high pressure pipe had fractured though.

REVERSE IS BACK :D(y) Thanks for all your expert knowledge and insightful information, but here's a good un. As I stopped the tractor on top of a hill today and it started to roll back slightly - excitement got the better of me:cool: and I said I would put it into reverse and lo and behold off it took - Reverse came back - seems to be working fine since- touch wood. (I think I might be a future mechanic - it could be my 'field' Ha Ha' Simpler than splitting it anyways Thank God. I kinda think problem is up on the panel - the knuckles might be a bit wore on lever ...but I sure ain't checking! Thanks again for ye're help folks Take Care Out There(y)
