Non CE sheds

Not heard that before, interesting if correct,
I am fairlycertain this is the case.We used to make sheds, but gave up because there was little profit. When these regulations were due to be introduced, I used it a s an excuse to stop, after studying them. If large companies have to cope with the not inconsiderable csots involved, they are going to do their best to shout the small, low overhead competiton out. All these regulations favour the large company, at least in the construction industry.

As I understand it CE marking reglations apply to sheds in series production therefore, if you make just one it doesn't need to be CE marked. The regulations are policed by trading standards.
Ah, but series production is considered to apply if they are making buildings with "varying properties." There is a derogation for "kit buildings", but that can lead to more complexity than the manufacturer doing proper CE.

Although it wouldn't be a cost effective answer, I would of thought that if the shed was designed by a qualified structural engineer, then there is no reason why an insurer shouldn't be happy to insure it. You need the paper work though, and that costs for one offs.

Sounds like that quality certificate thing that came out a few years ago, did not mean your work was good.........just that it was all of the same quality.. be that good or cr"p.

I spoke to our insurance guy asked if I build shed that's not ce marked would he insure it and he didn't know what ce marking was. The other way round is build it out of timber you cant weld that.

This all came about due to sheds collapsing due to severe weather (snow and wind). It was discovered that some companies were removing or not even fitting the wind braces on the steel structure. They were using the sheets to brace the structure.

So they weren't built to the British standard?

I'm in the middle of getting the necessary for EN1090. Various people have asked me why I'm bothering as it seems that it is not being policed. I am reliably informed that there will be a time when it is.

How difficult are you finding the process? And how much do you think it will cost, both initially and annually thereafter?
