Once place I had some exceptional personal perks which helped my own development I had a lot of responsibility for not a lot of years experience but delivered, works Christmas outing everyone paid half of though for several years

as A manager we would shout chips at Xmas from our own pocket

things which I probably have appreciated most other than a couple courses are the wife invited for meals Out etc, birthday/Xmas present for the child

paying people on time is so important 3 times we’ve had people in the yard in the last month or so mention the same bad payer

equally it’s all down to the person be a bit daft sending the guy who you think is your main cow guy to lamma

But you're not really paying it out of your pocket are you?

It'll just be part of your vets bill-a claimable expense
Well I (or my business) pay the vets bill, won’t be much change out of £100 with some post care meds etc. He’s had a few hours off work to sort it out, used my pickup and trailer to take it to vets etc, the sheep’s a royal pain in the ass as it thinks it’s human, won’t run for the dog etc. But I allow it as it keeps his daughter happy, so he’s happy etc. he‘d probably sell it as well given the chance.🤣

He‘ll make his hours up without asking, and would have paid the vets bill if I hadn’t piped up and said bang it on the account.

Heards man wants to buy some dairy heifer calves to rear, but they are far to dear to be feasible, so has asked if he can rear some pet lambs from a family member, partly for his kids, partly because he wants to go through the process and see if he can make it pay. They’ll be a PITA as well, but will support him.

Yes but these are the things that are really appreciated. So what if you can put it against tax and claim back the vat. The sheep's owner couldn't and he would have had to earn 25,% more than the vets bill pre tax so it cost the farmer 60cash and saved the chap 125. All win if you ask me.

Good on you, I hope the staff appreciate it, I know I certainly would.

I've worked for various size companies and here are some things to avoid that deluded decision makers usually have no idea make morale worse rather than better:

1. Cringe inducing forced fun, where everyone except the deluded decision maker is uncomfortable but they all smile while dying inside. Avoid structured artificial fun, rather than informal actual fun.

2. Insult gifts and bonuses, a tiny fraction of the extra value generated. You're better off giving an award/recognition, and not linking the bottle of fizz to any specific achievement, than giving something worth £5 specifically for earning the business an extra £50k. It's an insult when done wrong.

3. Improvements to productivity presented as perks by self congratulating bosses because the job is made more efficient. You are talking to staff not shareholders. They smile and nod, and are fully aware that the new kit is for your benefit, and they aren't going home early on the same pay or seeing any share of the gains. The speech you gave actually makes them resent you for being so out of touch with their salaried perspective.

Certainly agree with you on 1. and 2. Ribble

The list also needs to include "volunteering" for community projects.

I know of at least one business that regularly boasts that they are part of the local "community" What this means in reality, is that they are constantly looking for "volunteers" to litter pick the local beaches, help out at homeless shelters and food banks, look after the gardens of local oaps etc. etc.

All very well if you are into that sort of thing, but if you don't get involved, it is mentioned at your performance review.

On the other hand, they are one of the few businesses I know that don't give staff compassionate leave for the death of a family member.

Don't get me started on 'voluntary' or 'charitable' expectations in the workplace.

No, i don't want to chip in £2 for Sandra from accounts to get a birthday gift or someones charity run, but now you've passed the collection to me in front of everyone, I guess I'm going to have to spend money while being here to earn it.

Some workplaces ban all that because otherwise it ends up £2 a day for something or other.
