Non salary staff perks.

If you employee several people, it is best to have a team building event, be it a pub meal in middle of the day once a year, and once a year a few hours away doing something together, go karting, paint balling, rowing boat, even a few hours at a cookery class, something away from the normal, this not only gives them a sense of worth, but also builds a team of working together, and it either brings the employer down to their level, or rises the employee up to your level, but it depends on the employer that, don't be a stick in the mud, they will think less of you in the long run,
Giving several staff individually a perk, will not build a team, yet a combined gift all together will build a team, and team work is important to an employer if there is several staff,

Yes it will cost, however it is tax deductible, and a few hundred pounds invested in staff like this will be an asset long term, not only will it mean the staff will work together better, but will go the extra mile for you

Meal out occasionally, trip to the dog track with meal and £10 each for their first bet, Go-karting, Xmas turkey or ham, branded shirts and sweatshirts.
If they ask for something in the workshop or a better radio in the tractor, for example, I will usually buy it.
A verbal 'thank you' goes a long way I think as well.
We also pay the arable man a %age of the pig bonus same as the %age time he spent working with them as relief/weekends etc. Goes down well especially as its not his favourite job.

Beside their salary, do you provide staff with any extra perks?

We do a lot already to make the work places as desirable as possible rubber matting in the parlour, change equipment regularly etc
We started tackling mastitis a few years ago and every time we dropped 5 cases per 100 we got rid of tyres and brought more gravel bags for the silage pit.

This year I've decided to allocate budget to non salary perks. First on the list was branded beanies, caps, jackets etc. I thought maybe buy a whole boxed lamb and share it out. Then next time a pig or get one of those mobile car spa guys to wash everyones cars? Maybe bring the personal financial advisor I use in to speak to everyone?

Anyone got any good ideas?
Why not just ask them, or give them cash and they can do what they want

i’m not sure equipment like gravel bags or work uniform is a perk ! 🤣🤣

BTW - if you do provide genuine BIK - don’t forget to declare it for tax !

Surely it’s common sense just treat them fairly respect them and listen to any issues they have at work/ even at home. Pay on time and fairly and adequate time off. And say thankyou once and a while either a meal out or a box of beer/Prosecco. But All these perks need to work both ways.

Forgot we have cleaner comes in every Wednesday morning to clean office, break room and toilet, shower etc.

She always brings home baking for everyone. This is left in bothy for a few days till it's all eaten.

Hasn't been coming past few months due to covid though.

Hadn't thought to treat them to some gravel bags. You really spoil them.

Can't understand why you think gravel bags are a perk ? yes they might shift them faster than tyres but unless you're letting them sit and have a cup of tea in the time saved, I'd have thought they'd be of no benefit to them, how many cows do you milk ? give them a lamb apiece and don't be so mean, and I'm afraid if you tried to get me to wear branded clothes we'd part company pretty sharpish.

It’s alright buying meat for them but your a dairy farmer I guess, do all your heifers get in calf? Crazy selling something to buy something you already have, meat seems to be quite a common perk in NZ

Why wouldn’t you wear branded clothing

Its maybe not the best example, but I liked the idea, that you reward with improvements on the farm. There is loads of research that shows It all depends on the person and the business. Some people respond to a bollocking, some people respond to being told they are wonderful, just got to know who.

My staff have all work clothes. They get breakfast here everyday. They can take showers here and use computer and internet how they like. Wash their clothes and cars. Take all the milk home they want. A few of them has a horse or a few chickens. They can take any feed they want for this. The list just seems to grow every year. But i have happy people working here that doesn't complain, which is priceless, coming from something else.

Well publicised award winning farm near here provides a cream tea for all staff on a Friday and pays for routine massage/osteopath for all staff if they wish.favourable working hours/conditions/salary also seem to go down quite well too apparently.
I also believe @farmertom takes the whole team out for a meal and a good session at the local several times a year, milking apparently doesn't take long on those afternoons

Jeez, the largesse from some of you shows no bounds!

Extra gravel bags, a few tee shirts, telling the peasants how best to look after their meagre income! Do they genuflect as you walk past? Surprised some of you don't put a coin slot on the lav!

All PPE should be provided foc-that includes wellies, work boots, work coats, parlour wear, overalls, gloves etc.

You might as well let them charge stuff like sweatshirts, work trousers etc on your account at the local ag merchant-it's all tax deductable anyway.

Christmas bonus, free fuel if living "on the job" fuel allowance if not. Extra holidays for length of service. Free tea coffee biscuits bread in the crib room (and a toaster and sandwich grill) It will all cost you next to nothing anyway

Treat staff like you would want to be treated.

Timpsons the key cutters give all staff their birthday off as additional paid holiday day which is a nice touch (few other things too). Some good ideas on here though.

Love the gravel bags - one way to incentivise staff!

Proper showering block - where you can arrive in your civvies, tog up in work provided overalls/waterproofs/boots/wellies whatever, and off to work. Then at end of day leave all dirty work clothes/boots and crap at work, shower, back into civvies and head off clean. The farm took responsibility of washing and providing clean/new overalls and boots.
40 years ago I was provided with this on a pig unit - admittedly they took every precaution against diseases. But for me this was one massive perk and fully appreciated.

Christ your a sour bugger the extra gravel bags over tires would be welcome to make the job cleaner and easier the financial advisor would be very helpful to some folk who might not even consider using one there are some bosses around that don’t lord it over staff and treat them as equals and respect their opinions on things not just crack the whip and do as your master says 🙄

Funny old world where you are clearly trying to improve and someone is laughing.

its great to see anyone improving their business but i don’t think it’s fair to expect an employee to think access to tools and clothing required to do their job is a “perk” for them

a Christmas party, free meat, milk, eggs, a house l, extra time off or company car are perks
