It doesn't matter. It's all hugely subjective. Some years ago I saw 20000 guineas get spent on a bull that most people that I talked to described as anything between pretty average to dreadful. The cash sum involved is meaningless.

I always remember a great quote from a racehorse trainer from many years back about the misty Autumn morning he took a walk round Newmarket Sales Paddocks and he took a liking he couldn't explain to a small , slightly weedy colt that had more winners in his background pedigree than power and scope in his underdeveloped frame.

"who could have foretold that long gone morning that this , above all other more impressive looking colts on that day , would be the Prince that would sire a Dynasty?"

That for me says it all.

Great quote- do you recall if the puny looking colt turned out to be great ? Was it Mill Reef , Saddlers Wells or Shergar? Or did it run once in a seller at Redcar , then turn into Tesco lasagne ?

Sadly he never named the speedy nag as I recall, but I suspect he was no Everyday Value Burger.

Thats why i go to Lairg or Dingwall, more choice, better quality and less silly money, its a fair drive but well worth the effort.

If you want commercial sheep at reasonable money Lairg has been the place to go for the last no of years.Everyone takes their best sheep to Lairg but the trade up there is now struggling to keep up with Dingwall.

Large entry for lairg. Real concern over tge number of sheep to go to useable pens.
That should be fun as usual when sale starts it will be left to yardsmen to sort it out.

At Dalmally yesterday there were as many ewes outside the shed in temporary pens as there were inside in the proper one's. If you're favoured with a big entry I suppose you just have to do what you can.

Can you do this at Lairg? Is there room and could it be done? I only ask because I've never been there.

The not really the biggest problem is the pens are just glorified firewood, so cannot pack too full.

The sooner the place is bombed by Isis the better.

Doesn't help having tups as this reduces capacity.
