Exactly our point. He can buy an R3L texel x mule lamb for £84, if he buys an R3L texel x masham or Suffolk x mule for £79 due too it’s rough wool or wrong colour face and he sends them all too the same abattoir requiring R3L lambs and they come too £87 on the hook then he’s just made £3 margin on the tex mule (barely covers costs) and £8 on the Suffolk or masham bred lambs.

but the processor isn’t just ordering “R3L” lambs, their requirements are a lot more specific than that. It’s the difference between having two or three options on the lambs or just being able to pitch them in.

What about killing out percentage. Tighter skinned lambs kill out better.

They do, but I was thinking about a bunch of lambs purely out of mule and masham ewes, all the same breeding. I didn’t think the KO% would be very different between them if you seperated them according too jacket?
I do think there is a bit of rational thinking in that the rougher coated ones have thrown back to the swale/blackie etc etc so won’t be as meaty. The nice tight skinned lambs out of mules always carry more shape so maybe they are right. I have killed plenty rough looking lambs for freezer, well fed they all taste lovely and plenty of meat.

Whenever I’ve felt mad enough in spring and I’ve sheared a ruck I can never tell which was right skinned and which was rough (apart from the odd one that takes too much after its mother of course) 50kg, like a greyhound and still not finished!! 🙄
