January conc feeding somewhere between .35 and .37kg/ litre
In my generalization of half the milk cheque gone I've included all calf meal and milk replacerbecause it came out of milk cheque and the cxxt is still away with it
When talking about costs some farmers never include those meals or milk replacer. You’d think they didn’t have to pay for it!

Each to their own z but having been where you are believing that volume drove income i took sone convincing before changing. I can now assure you that cost control and milk solids drive income and good silage and maize or fooder beet will work out cheaper than large meal bills . Finally Grass is king either zero grazed or grazed nothing like it to put money in your pocket. I still milk ayr but am taking the scenic route to spring calving and wii cut back on autumn. Unfortunately the bonuses for winter milk dont cover enough of the costs to make it really profitable . Currently i am feeding rolled barley [ my own ] value 230 euro ? Soya at 355 soya hulls 200 beet pulp at 250 and corn gluten at a price not yet agreed. Half my milk cheque goes to the bank so no way could the meal man get the other half.

What sorta outfit are they to work for?

Sorry got distracted by z's meal bill which is far more interesting than my carreer path!! I can't complain about it, have been there 16 years and quite a lot have been there 20+ years. Never really worked in the production side- prefer to be out and about. Keeps me in sweetie money, gets me off farm and is only 10 mins from home.

This is nothing against z but why do you all talk about lites when your not paid for them ?
I remember when we changed to milk solids payment and the milk recording data showed the value of each cows milk . That fairly conentrated the mind on solids and litres were irrelevant. Currently our herd average 650 kilos of solids on 1.5 ton of cheapish meal

But your base price not hav to meet certain solids criteria ?
Prices are adjusted up or down compared to base (around 3.8 & 3.15). The adjustments mean that low quality milk is overpaid and high quality milk is underpaid compared to your system, so the driver is more for volume & reasonable solids than for less dilution.
If that's not clear basically if two farms had the same kg of solids, the one with more volume would be paid slightly more. Not particularly sensible given our product mix but none of the dairies want to jump first.
