In theory there should be less time tied up with 100 sucked cows than 100 milkers.
You have to milk twice a day and then rear calves after. The sucklers don't need milked and rear their own calves!

It does seem like there are farmers out there that love the idea of going into milk and don’t realise that you don’t get that monthly cheque for doing nothing. I remember a diary farmer telling me he was holding up cars in the morning for people heading to their work when he was walkinh his cows out to the field after milking them, then he was holding up the same cars in the evening bringing them into milk again, implying that he started and finished his day long outside the typical working day.

I think what grates with the established dairy men Is the assumption by some start-ups that all you have to do is milk the cows for an hour morning and evening and spend the rest of the day counting all the money you make. Fella told me that he was going to renovate tractors during his free time during the day when he starts milking 100 cows.

But they’ll soon realise it’s not as straight forward so I don’t why the establishment would let it grate on them.

Most farmers(non specific) do not realise how flexible there jobs are and how unflexible a ‘9-5’ job is.
They are a lot of farmers hitting the snooze button when the motorway is full

Nonsense - who hasn’t put themselves into the axle, but I’d hardly say they won’t find a way out
That's what I said ,they're are into the axle,it can still be done on a budget, don't need the all singing all dancing stuff, invest in good cows
It all depends on the definition of into the axle,3 -4k/cow certainly is to me
400k -5k a month for ten years,tight going

Anyone other than Agrarian and i at the red tractor meeting ? I thought the presentation by speakers was a bit of a waste of time,,,,UFU had met them previous night and i hope they get on the Reds tails and not just all talk.....Lissue House not being there cause they were scared of getting lynched.....when floor was opened some very valid points well made but near the end some people let themselves get carried away and would have been better giving thier milk buyer an ear bashing and not the Reds about our current milk price state ....just some of my thoughts the floor is open as Victor said.

Keep us posted on it @The Agrarian. Seems like the new changes are another nail for the smaller milk producers....

Today's meeting was a useful exercise I think. It's too early to say just what response Red Tractor will make, if any, to the concerns raised at the meeting. But it also served a secondary purpose of allowing some farmer venting of general frustration with the scheme. And the representatives from red tractor certainly left with the impression that the scheme is not our most cherished piece of bureaucracy.

Several things were discussed. Top of the list was of course the unannounced inspections for those funnelled into an elevated risk category. Valid reasons were given by red tractor for the implementation, and equally valid ones given from the floor why it was an unreasonable expectation of small and medium family farms, who may only have one person responsible for red tractor.

The criteria to be used to select those for reinspection were glossed over. I had a discussion at the end with them and asked for some clarity to be released to members on this.

As the primary sector of our industry, we do not always present ourselves in the best light at meetings like this - and today was no exception. The one ray of light beaming from the floor was a courteous, but direct lady, who fielded several well formed points with considerable skill (she brought notes to refer to...), and was the only speaker who was remotely a match for the polished team from RT.

Two useful groups in the one meeting?

It's more useful than hoping.
