Northern Ireland Milk Price Tracker

How can you have a milk price that’s 20% lower than your Southern Ireland neighbours when the exchange rate differences are 10%?
It occurs to me there is some cross border subsidisation going on as Lakeland tries to compete with its bigger competitors in the republic.

Hard hitting article on the front of Farm Week from UFU Deputy President Victor Chestnut asking why NI price is one of the lowest in Europe. It's not the first time this has happened, surely in a sector dominated by farmer Co ops we should be doing much better as the processors don't have to keep the share price up as they would if they were PLC's. Any ideas out there or are we just being took for a pack of fools prepared to work very long hours for next to nothing?

Playing devils advocate - are our prices lower precisely because we are generally coops with a farmer board. No disrespect to any that may be serve or have served on co op boards but how much control do boards have over those employed to run the company? Taking lp/ Tom as an example and the loss of jobs in the Monaghan site, all press releases say that the factory was outdated and losing money for some time. If this was a company driven by profit for shareholders rather than sentiment for farmer owners something would have been done a lot sooner than the Lakeland takeover

Is my standard dale farm base being dropped to subsidise those on fixed price contract of 28p?
Shouldn't be we were told it was a stand alone contract and would have no impact on the base price, that's why you're legally bound to supply the contracted volume of milk. Both of the fixed price schemes look good now, I wonder is another one coming, hard to see how you'd get a good enough price now

The cynic in me thinks that pulling the standard price down is a good way to push another fixed price deal at a lower price. Base price falls to say 22p but we can offer you a fixed price of 26p, plenty would jump at it.

Dont think there's any future price contracts in pipeline for this yr. Prices too low and Brexit uncertainty

Pull the plug, that will tighten them, too many farmers in too deep to comprehend this action and probably little united support. It would be short term pain for long term gain, take back control, pull the plug. As a straw poll who would,1 day a week for 1 month, I would. We need to be more like the French, direct action
How can it be a quality product at 24p.

Absolutely, I would. The problem is, as you say, lack of unity. For each of us prepared to pull the plug there are 2 or 3 who wouldn't!

100% I’d do it, unity is the answer to it tho and as ballygreenan said not enough would do it. How is your french anyhow? Maybe you could lead from the front for us....

Agree with you but farmers wont ever pull together. Unfortunately while milk is a quality product its also a COMMODITY that is presently in oversupply and it looks as if it aint improving in the short term. NZ production will be the biggest factor on markets in the next few months.
