Mammy Mammy, who is that man who walks by the window?
Wont be long til they think your a silly old plonker that hasnt got a clue and tells non funny jokes. Yes yes yes i know its comin for me tooI think we're all guilty of missing what's important, a farm is living, breathing, it needs attention too but I do feel I've missed the children when they were young, I'm lucky I can still fix it,they're young ish yet. They still think I know all,how that will change
Here big man. Our jokes are funny. Not our fault most of the population aren’t as switched on as us lolWont be long til they think your a silly old plonker that hasnt got a clue and tells non funny jokes. Yes yes yes i know its comin for me too
Yeah lets go way that. It takes a smart man to act the fool yanoHere big man. Our jokes are funny. Not our fault most of the population aren’t as switched on as us lol
Wow wow wow, I thought calves at those prices were a thing of the past, what were the angus and sh like?Took 8 calfs to mart this mornin. 3 angus 2 shorthorn and 3 fresian bulls. Went in later to lift cheque which was the grand total of 154. The oldest of these was 20th of may. Complete joke. If i lived in a place/time where there was no paper work or payin to remove dead stock anythin that wasnt a replacement milker would be better shot at birth. What bills does 154 quid pay nowadays
I just sold an aubrac bull out the yard for £190 2 weeks oldThe sh were 2 bulls. I about 2 weeks old and the othe around 4 weeks. They made 26 quid each. The angus was 2 heifers n 1 bull. Couple 2 weeks 1 3 weeks and they made 45 apiece
Think il mabe sell the next lot privately. Least it would save rippin away to the martI just sold an aubrac bull out the yard for £190 2 weeks old
Do you never sell private ? If you have good calves you’ll get repeat customers eventually, if someone sells those at double the price it’s easy money and still cheap calvesThink il mabe sell the next lot privately. Least it would save rippin away to the mart
Personally i used to give them 2 litres of it but since doin the cafre course on antibiotics they advised 4 litres at birth and now im doin that i can see a big difference. Another thing i try to do is clean the bedding out every few days and wet and brush the floor before rebedding resulting in cleaner air doin away with ammonia. Since doin this iv hardly had to jag for pneumonia. That batch of calves had never had 1 injectionWe’re very lucky and fit to sell all our calf’s out of the yard, but we’ve repeat customers know what they are getting and that they have been done right, plenty of dairy farmers out there see that it’s not a heifer calf and don’t bother much with colostrum
Not always easy to get clean pens but we’ve 2 rows of 20 and will always try and take calf’s out clean and wash the row b4 putting new calf’s inPersonally i used to give them 2 litres of it but since doin the cafre course on antibiotics they advised 4 litres at birth and now im doin that i can see a big difference. It was a mutual price both parties happy, he paid 300 for a strong Angus in a mart a month or more agoAnyone buying calves at any scale out of the yard is not going to pay much more than what they can buy them for at the mart. That man who bought the aubrac bull could have had 4 Angus bull calves for the same price...
See i used to clean between batches but now i do it with calves in situ. If u get down close to the floor and take a few breaths ul feel the ammonia comin up so a calf is breathin that in all the time its lying so its better to remove it every 3-4 days. It doesnt take long as theres only a small amount of bedding to doNot always easy to get clean pens but we’ve 2 rows of 20 and will always try and take calf’s out clean and wash the row b4 putting new calf’s in
Better than a dead one thoughNever made money from bull calves, I'm still here, they're a by product
Autumn calving men are gonna get a shock when they finally realise how bad calf prices now are.i know a lot of men who were getting 250 a calf @ 2 weeks old.
Economically debatableBetter than a dead one though
