If milk is so bad why are so many starting up?
I got a cheque 2 weeks ago and I'll get another one in 2 weeks time, grant it, it didn't stop long in the account, but that is mostly my fault for buying stuff I don't really need and paying ground rent that I complain is too dear. I didn't give any up though.
The suckler men got a cheque in October and will have to wait a year for the next one.

Is it anything to do with how often the cheques come in? I thought it was about what was left over. :scratchhead:

When you fully cost milk production, including all the bits that most people forget about, it doesn't look too clever at 25p. Remember the five year average milk price isnt a great deal more than that. If the farm payment wasn't there, there'd be a lot less farming going on.

Yes it certainly is about what's left over, but it's also about cash flow, and if you're in milk you only have to wait a month for the next cheque.
It's not the milk price that's the problem, it's the direct debit for the pickup, the tractor, the feeder wagon and all the other the suits try to sell to us at the winter fair.

Does'nt need to be a shiny one just out of the box though, not as big a monthly on a 10 year old one. Then again not as much admiration from the neighbours.
How much milk do people reckon would be in the country if it was 40p? Nobody better at beating a farmer than himself.

Why not? Should we work 14 hours a day and work with scrap? Why should we? Every other industry can work with reasonably new equipment, why shouldn’t farmers? We’re no less entitled to have something enjoyable to work with than anyone else. I’m not saying it has to be the most up to date thing on the market but I don’t see why anyone working as hard as we do shouldn’t be entitled to afford the proper equipment to use and to change it when it gives bother.

Farmers are entitled to buy whatever they like........just don't complain about the milk price when the cheque doesn't cover the payments.

I don't like DDs much. Have never had a machine on DD. Youngest tractor is 8. It carts all my slurry and mows and harvests all my grass. Don't use a feeder wagon either. Have never bought anything other than a burger at a show.

When I started farming, I did not take a vow of poverty nor did I want to feed the world for free,I'm in this job for me me me,my cows have newer mattresses that mine ,Christmas is coming, what will I sell this year so I can buy the kids presents
Yet another cow

Maybe you should have embarked on a different career all those years ago, nobody twisted your arm?

i agree that some people have only themselves to blame for irresponsible borrowing or going beyond their means BUT long term it isnt sustainable to get the same milk price as 25 years ago. everything else has gone up why shouldn't our milk? Businesses need to get enough to re invest just to stand still and keep everything fixed and in good order. 32 steady is about right.
