After months of saying “Never,Never,Never”, I did my Red Tractor inspection today. Should never have worried about it. It’s farm quality assurance with the dairy and milking parlour added on. Actually see it as a really good thing now . May have to give the spark £200 for putting on switches and light fixtures but milking in a parlour where all lights work and your stainless steel is shining makes for a better work place. Cubicle house looked completely different when I switched on lights before leaving tonight (getting dark...nights are fair drawing in). Too many farmers keep putting off routine maintenance..too busy. RT gives us the kick up the arse we need to get the place sorted. Paperwork was easy too.
Virtual or in person inspection?

Seems like October already. Guess it'll either get worse or better. still have to sow for another cut on ground cut that spell 2.5 weeks ago. Hard to know, would nearly be better to buy silage and save the bother and let it be grazed/ tramped. The Joy's of heavy land.
'buy silage and save' That can be a tricky one. Cows ate 4 bales lastnight at £22/bale.
:scratchhead: At least they didn't need as much meal.

Its been a sad , bad day. After 24 years clear TB returned 28 cows and 3 springing heifers came up positive when the yearly test was read today . Thats 28 cows out of 120 and 3 heifers out of 15 .
The vet said that i will have more when the blood test. The co - op have said that the milk from the reactors has to be dumped. It seems that badgers are responsible . Any one have any thoughts or experience of how long it takes a to get clear ?

Sometimes the bigger the outbreak, the quicker its cleared. Taking ones and twos could go on for years.

Sorry to hear this. Until there is a concerted effort to eradicate TB in all wildlife vectors this will continue to happen.

It may sound harsh when you've just had such a kick in the guts (or lower!) but if at the next test you have similar levels of reactors then the best thing may be to have a complete clearance, wash, disinfect, rest and restock when allowed. A very similar thing happened our next door neighbour with their suckler herd a couple of years ago. All taken over 3 consecutive tests but restocked now.

On a separate issue, if anyone is having problems with rats I've been told that rat poison mixed with peanut butter and placed near their burrows is highly effective.

Know how you feel we went down 6 years ago after never having tb on the farm in my or my dad's lifetime and he was 75 at the time
We new it was only a matter of time every one around us was already down
It was nearly 13 months before we where clear
Sadly we went down again 4 months ago it's something we are going to have to live with on till the politicians can have the balls to stand up to the black and white stripy lovers to do something about it

The rest of the herd will be blood tested next week and after that we will be on a sixty day testing cycle. Hopefully i will go clear within 3 tests but who knows ?? A big turnaround from last year when the herd was very clean with not a trace of a lump . The thought of a prolonged restriction worries me as since i only rear about twenty replacements a year and sell the rest of the calves . Having to hold on to all the bulls as well as the beef calves could be a right pain in the butt . I never really kept beef cattle and extra wotk is not what i need. I grow grain fo my low return but enjoyable enterprise and idont want to add calf to beef to the list !!!
The Dept will be trapping badgers next week to try and find the source but i wont be holding my breath .

Trapping and testing? Or eliminating?

Testing and will make a decision based on results . Other farmers have had infected badgers removed but i dont know how true it is but a lady told me that badgers with TB die fairly quick .
They might die quick, but the young boars roam on looking for a mate, and same as cattle can carry and pass it on and not be affected by it. We seen a few years ago dire looking badgers in Day light walking down the road! They roam upto 3km a night
