Beginning to think burning off is a waste of time and chemical. Fields I have killed and ploughed in the past two years are definitely worse with docks and buttercup than before reseeding.
Doesn't kill weeds I dont think. Just stops old grass getting up too quick and taking over sward. Roundup on side of lane in early spring. Nettles and thistles 3ft high in August every year. No grass though. Definitely no use on docs.

Timing. You're too early for the thistles and the nettles. And nettles are quite tough. Need to go again.

Regarding more weeds after reseeding. Cultivation brings up a new layer of seeds into the right conditions for germination, which may have been lying dormant for years. The soil contains a huge seed bank. It's an endless job controlling them.

Do you post spray the reseed?
Yes. I'm new to the reseeding game,we used to never bother. Last year's field hadn't been turned in sixty years. I just thought with round up I wouldn't need to spray for a few years. I was wrong so I just don't see the point. If you get the sod well turned there will be no old grasses.

Bear in mind it's in the best interests of the spray manufacturer NOT to formulate a product which will kill the weeds, better for them to merely check them back for a while!

How are you to know how the ploughing is going to go though before you do it? I get issues with soil sticking to the boards here in certain conditions, which obviously affects the quality of the turn.

You've cut off all the annual weeds, which come ahead faster after sowing, and die after they're cut. But perennial weeds like dock seedlings are slower, and its next year that you'll see a rash of them, unless it's very clean ground. And they'll be harder to kill then as they'll have developed a root.
