Flying is fine if you can get heifers at £1200. This 16 to 2k is madness. Buy a few heifers and the milk cheque is away.
I'd have to agree with that. I've never bought a cow or a calf yetFlying is fine if you can get heifers at £1200. This 16 to 2k is madness. Buy a few heifers and the milk cheque is away.
I'm killing beef at 24 months and getting£1000--1300. In the winter there could be near 1T of beef ration in them to finish...dairy heifer does not have that expense. Thinking of changing to rearing replacement. Dairy stock is impossible to buy, always is in the autumn. What do you reckon it costs to rear a good heifer to 2yr? £1200 is good buller/Springer money.
What model are we talking about?By one report, that's the second time that tractor has done that, under two owners. Local contractor has had *some* do it too apparently.
A 24 month calving heifer will have got at least half a tonne of meal, the odd one won't go in calf or abort, there will be felon, hard calvings, slow milkers & kickers to weed out.I'm killing beef at 24 months and getting£1000--1300. I was talking about the last 90 days, upward of 10kg/head/day,dear knows how much meal before that.A 24 month calving heifer will have got at least half a tonne of meal, the odd one won't go in calf or abort, there will be felon, hard calvings, slow milkers & kickers to weed out.
That’s a slippery slope , once you do that you end up questioning is it better to sell as drop calvesHave you sold any as forward stores, to see how it compared to taking them on to finish?

Apologies NI friends I meant to post this in all things dairy ! It wasn’t meant to wind up all you wet weather suffers. ☔️View attachment 904904Finally got some grass back in front of them. Hopefully September will be a cheaper month. Though it would nice to keep the solids!
Everything finished here, much to the annoyance of the auld boy, my argument is that the man who buys the calf or the store is trying to make money, so I may as well have it all.
I'm greedy like that, or maybe it's ambition.
Youve a totally different climate . We have our challenges here....always too much rainApologies NI friends I meant to post this in all things dairy ! It wasn’t meant to wind up all you wet weather suffers. [emoji299]️

last year I entered 18 bulling heifers at Local mart ,got vet to check them beforehand had to withdraw 3as they couldn’t breed ,so there’s another issue when buying bullers.
