The good spell in March after slurry went on was a massive factor. Grass got growing and there was enough cover by the the time the cold snap came to keep the ground warm.

Im informed by a soil and plant professor to not sow after cutting until the field is green again as the plant needs to be growing to use the nitrogen and theres less loss doin it this way compared to sowing immediatly

Seems there maybe something to the theory of 2 bags in the heat is worth 3 in the cold, anecdotal I know but worth a thought considering price, only caveat I'd say is we put on autumn slurry and had sheep on only 30 acres, if there's a big difference in quantity, no more sheep

By the time you've the slurry out your grass will be green, with reduced n all these sowing dates cutting dates , worried about n content, they all disappear
And to weewillie, yip rem the 4 bags,yes 4 bags of 2 sward and that other idiotoctic idea of sowing the 2nd cut 2 weeks before cutting 1st, what were they thinking, that was the 70s. Any more than 500kg and your front wheels were in the air

I have noticed that since I started the 2nd round of grazing,milk volume is well up. First round had no fertiliser. Nitrogen raises grass protein equals more milk. I would worry that reduced fertiliser usage on silage ground could reduce silage protein = less winter milk.

Good point although first round had cold weather keeping sugars low.

At least you know what return you'll get with meal, fertiliser put on in a dry spell/wet spell/cold spell not sure of the response you'll get.

Thats what he said do it way slurry first. I know 1 man that goes out sowin the fert straight after the chopper which isnt reccommended

I’ll sow ours before slurry as much for the fact it keeps the sower and tractor cleaner but I see no difference what way it’s done

My understanding was that it does not matter in what order you do it, but for best results you should leave 7 days between each.

I say fertiliser. It could all be scare mongering but feed reps say that meal could be rationed this winter to keep pigs/hens fed.

Basically what ever tonnage you got last winter, you would be allowed this winter.

Lakeland are already restricting delivery. I know of men looking full load delivery before last month price rise but only allowed usual delivery.

Relief milker is looking for a jersey heifer calf for a present. Doesn’t have to be purebred, just needs to look like a jersey. Any suggestions?
