Northern Ireland Milk Price Tracker

When the milk market is saturated we'll see if youre of the same opinion
Milk market is already saturated in ni that's why around 80% has to be processed.
Our prices are mostly related to global markets, a few new men with 70 cows here isn't going to make a lot of difference

Could say that about the meal man, fertiliser man, ai man, vet, silage contractor, machinery dealer the list goes on. Too many hangers on in farming generally I think.
The secret to profitable dairying is do as much as you can yourself and keep the men in vans at the farm gate high input doesn't really mean high profit. High input = high numbers of hangers on

would agree except to say I would go further and include machinery in my list so we use contractors for nearly all field work. Not a trait usually seen in N I I believe.
our contracting bill is 1.83 p how would that compare to the avg NI depreciation bill?

It's not directly comparable because you have an exceptionally long season, with much less forage to preserve and slurry to store and spread. Lots of people use contractors here too. So would be more relevant to compare depreciation etc vs contractor across NI, Scotland, NW England...

Some here can compare contractor cost with you, but we know how it will come out.

I used to be plagued with chaps appearing trying to sell me the latest magic product. Thankfully most have given it up as a bad job now and don't bother with me. Outside of the obligatory dairy chemical (of which I stick to bog standard), worm dose and AI straws, I buy very little other magic products.

New entrants into dairy need a robust business plan in place to draw down funding. Not going to be easy with no track record of dairy farming. If they look to previous enterprise benchmarking results ie suckler cows, they need to be in the top 25% to stand a chance.

With regards to grant aiding poultry houses, unless someone was on the bandwagon early they won't stand much of a chance. A new entrant will need to have farm business Id in place first and planning permission too. Not to mention moy parks approval as well.

I believe in this day and age there's little need for cold calling, someone to lift money or take an order maybe, but thankfully those days of reps calling every day to sell something you don't need seem to be on the decline.

It depends on how you were reared when it comes to the shinning metal. We were reared lean and machinery needs to be justified. Some differ. On ni plus side is most farms are owned so rental can be low. My rental works out at £6 plus pence per cow. Others differ. You get a summer. We might. Need a plan b when it comes to grass. 2016 summer was terrible
