Depends on the bull and probably age as borderterribles says
In the past I've had trouble replacing within a week but current Hereford lost his last Autumn . not got round to doing it but I can see through the hole and occasionally he gets a dock stalk through it from silage (he's 7 yo)

Why do you need to replace his ring? If need be, you can use a humbug to lead him.

We would never dream of ringing a homebred bull, and always cut the ring out of any bought at pedigree sales.

I am talking about Limousin bulls, but it might be necessary to ring other more aggressive breeds.

I’ve read that you should never ring your own bulls, get someone else to do it. I’ve also read (on here I think, several years ago) that the bull never forgets the person who rings him..... Any views?
We ring all our bulls ourselves now. Never had any trouble.

We won't have a breeding bull on the farm without a ring in! And we would never sell a bull without a ring, in fact I was under the impression it was illegal to sell a breeding bull in a market without one.

Broke the ring? Or ripped his nose?
If the former, put a new ring as soon as you can. If he's ripped his nose, you might not be able to depending how bad the rip is. I have heard of people having the nose stitched if it's ripped, and also seen bulls with the middle part missing.

Broken ring I think. Very little blood.

Could not find ring in the mud.

I've always had Jersey bulls, and always have a ring in them, once they are of working age. As @Cowmansam says, if he's got you on the deck, having a ring to hang on to and twist is a damn sight better than nothing.
The first big bull i had pull his ring out, was an oldish bull that i had imported from Jersey. He was used to being tethered, so I had him out on a Taylor bull tether . During a spell of hot weather I'd put him out at night, instead of in the daytime, as there wasn't any shade for him. One night he pulled his ring out and went off to see what mischief he could find. Unfortunately, my then in-laws were staying in their touring caravan in an adjacent orchard. Notice the use of the word "then "
The old bull found a stack of corrugated tins to play with. ExFiL thought he was battering his car, so opened the curtains to look out the window. The bull saw him and went to have a scratch on the caravan instead. Anyway the commotion woke me up, so I let some cows out with the bull and got them all in together. Needless to say, things were pretty quiet over breakfast that morning, the occupants of the caravan hitched up and left and I am no longer married to their daughter!

All bulls ringed here homebred or otherwise, don't care if he remembers who ringed him. Anyone with any experience of working with bulls knows its all mind games, he has to recognize you as the boss, the moment he thinks he is then you may have problems. A wise man once told me you should always treat a gun like its loaded and a bull that its untrustworthy.
Get the ring back in it.
