Not man flu, so what is it?

Around here 111 are using the ambulance service as a trieage instead of A&E. I phoned 111 in respect of suspected snake bite and a bit shocked to be sent ambulance but they did explain and as it happened ended up in hospital for several hours of treatment.

First piece of advice: if you can't through to a GP and you feel you are particularly unwell, then you need to speak to 111. Before Covid started, I would have said get yourself to a major hospital or even MIU, they all have wards/clinics that are not A and E acute but see patients who are unwell and need looking at. I don't know why people are so insistent on seeing a GP, there are other places to go. Nobody has to sit and wait or suffer in silence. That said, far too many morons call for ambulances these days for clearly non-acute problems. Don't be like them.

111 will have doctors and nurses who assess your symptoms. It would be helpful if you have been taking your temperature or even have a digital blood pressure monitor or pulse oximeter and can tell them over the phone what these numbers are.

Anyway, the OP stated he has been sweating, presumably high temperature, head and joint pain. High temperature is normally associated with some kind of infection. Severe headache that won't ease despite painkillers etc means you should be calling 111. As above, these people will dispatch an ambulance if they deem it necessary.

@ImLost have you been seen yet? Another thing to throw into the mix is Lymes disease, are you aware of any insect (tick) bites? That said, apparently you don't always notice the bite and it does not always have the classic 'bullseye' rash. Make sure you mention you work out of doors and with cattle, should broaden their thought process.

Thanks for asking @Princess Pooper, please don't shoot me, but I gave up in the end. I took up @Dry Rot suggestion of getting some rest and it seemed to put most things right and then came out in a stinking cold and I didn't think it worth going to a doctor if they are going to say that's all it is! As and when I have the same symptoms again I'll be heading there ASAP, I can't stick having the same thing happen over and over. But I'm OK for now (I've manned up 😶)
If it flares up again, at least I have a list of possible answers!

Family are slightly mad that I didn't go to the doctors so won't be able to escape so easily next time 😳 but after bad experiences with hospitals etc I can't help doing all I can to avoid the places!!

Glad to hear you're better but disappointed to hear only "most things right". But did you follow the complete course by including a good malt? Addinhg hot water, honey, and lemon juice is good for colds. ;)

Ah! Damn, I missed that bit! Today looks like it will be another cold, wet, windy day in front of the fire, I might have to complete the full course of "medication" 😉

To be totally honest, it's the weird lumps that hang around in my armpits that are still bothering me, and the cold sweats that often accompany them when they appear 🤔 weird

Glad you are feeling better but given your last sentence you should still get checked out - could be lymph node infection which (small chance) might be cancerous.

Whilst googling can turn you into a complete hypochondriac as it comes up with all the rare and sometimes terminal diagnoses, that rare disease that you think 'no that couldn't possibly be correct, it's so unlikely' did actually turn out to be what I had (not a cancer though).

To be serious for a moment, swellings under the armpits does not sound at all good. Get it checked! I've always found NHS24 good, but I'm in Scotland. At least you get your symptoms reviewed by a medic, if only a nurse.

Get checked out
Have you Googled “lumps under armpits and cold sweat” ???
It might be Hodgkinsons Lymphoma or some other nasty thing

@ImLost
It may be nothing, but lumps in the armpits and night sweats are reasons to persist in getting an appointment with doctor. Talking from our experience with daughter's boyfriend who was diagnosed with the above just before Christmas, be very persistant and firm that you need to see someone. It took long enough for his diagnosis because his job didn't tie-in with surgery opening hours when trying to make an appointment and that was before lock down  Hopefully it will not be anything to worry about but it should be checked out properly.

Either contact doctor's again or the telephone/online service. Also look at your doctor's web page, it should give you the various means of contacting them.

Good luck, be persistant and don't forget to tell the doctor all the symptoms
