A question for the semi engineers....

How accurately 90 degrees is angle iron?

I'm in the market for some cheap but good corner clamps for fabrication. I have a reasonable supply of normal clamps (can you ever have too many clamps) and was wondering about sourcing four bits of large angle, like 6 or 8 inch to use to clamp inside. But not much point if it transpires it's all 80 something degrees as opposed to 90

Finding someone willing to sell a foot or two will be a challenge too but I'll cross that bridge if it's worth doing
I’d say it’ll be very accurate.
It will have to be within a certain tolerance but that tolerance will be pretty tight

You will possibly be surprised at the range of acceptable tolerance allowed within both hot rolled and cold formed steels as dont forget they are sold as structural steels and not a precision engineering grade, I'll dig the relevant standard out tomorrow when in the office. We have had steels delivered that are within acceptable tolerance but if you drilled or plated the connection into the beam in the correct place relative to the section axis it would not bolt together.

You are right Dave, most of it should be good, but I’ve had some shocking examples! Box that is more like a diamond than a square! And angle that is an absolute joke!

It’s going to boil down to finding someone who will flog you want you need, and checking it with a good square. But check it first, or they will be pretty peeved if they chop a bit off and you then say you don’t want it!:)

Crikey. I thought it was just a vicious rumour that you actually knew stuff

Just priced up two lengths @300mm long cut from 200 x 200 angle
can buy a 6m length cheaper

go to a scrap yard and take a square with you

Thanks for the info lads, only way it'll work out cheap is if I can get an offcut somewhere, would be mad money to buy as no one would want to cut so little off a full length.

@holwellcourtfarm it's not just the fillet but the whole inner profile of angle iron is often not parallel to the outside. I want something to clamp inside a corner when fabricating, so wont matter here.

@Forever Fendt it's for small things I want them. Generally for a large frame the weight of the metal is enough to keep it where you want it. I dont know how accurate a fabricated square would be

looks like no-one in town has anything to suit in stock so I'll keep my eyes peeled next time I'm near a scrap man

would a cast iron angle plate be any good for what you need,We used to use one a lot for making small brackets ect, the slots are handy for bolting stops on to drop your small bits up to

Buying a corner clamp. I've put the square on a couple of bits of angle in the last few days (got some odd looks too) they seem to generally be a smidge under 90.

An angle plate isnt something I'd seen before, funky things and not too expensive.

McKay metals have a great site, their prices for small cut pieces are very reasonable compared to others and they have a great range of sizes, one for the favourites definitely.

I've concluded that there's no such thing as a free lunch on this one, unless one comes across something in a scrappy which I rarely have the time to frequent.

Thanks for the input folks

After years of putting billhooks down whilst hedging & then spending ages looking for the things, I decided to paint them orange. Worked for a year then the paint wore off & aged orange seems quite a good camo against autumn leaves anyway, so back to square one.
Last autumn I went to see the National Hedgelaying championships & saw that (durrr:scratchhead:) everyone was using holsters for the billhook. After much deliberation I decided to make this type. It used some mild steel strap around 1/2" by 100thou thick.

What a revelation! Billhook is always where you want it, you don't have to look to put it back - it just sits naturally on your hip - why didn't I do this YEARS ago:banghead::banghead::banghead: . Only thing you have to be careful about is getting back onto the quad or (perish the thought) into the Bentley.
Heartily recommend making one of these for anyone using a billhook.

(I didn't put it in the bodging thread even though the metal is well second hand because, although making the belt loop bends was easy, bending in the long direction of the bar required heating & careful hammering to avoid wrinkling. I thought the "careful" bit would cause problems even though no measurements were involved:whistle:)
