We have a pickhill bantam. At least I think that's what it is it sounds familiar. It's been relegated to battery charging for the last 15 years when we got an inverter. Much better welder I think I can actually use it without making all the trips going off 🤣

My old fella can never get over how I have more amps out of a little box the size of a toaster than out of "a proper" welder.!!!:D:D
That said the old one has welded some amount of stuff here over the years.

Ours never did much because it could only be used from the plug that was wired to where the milking parlour was. Dad always assumed he couldn't weld but he just wasn't giving it enough power for fear of blowing the trips again or welding scrap because he didn't want to mess up good steel with his crappy welding.
When I was 15 I think doing design and technology in school and needed to learn to weld for my project dad bought this inverter and turns out he can weld just fine

I have found, after a similar 15 year break with my Pickhill Bantam, that the addition of a pair of glasses has returned some of my lost skills
My welding got a lot better after the addition of some prescription lenses into my welding helmet, many auto helmets have a slot on the 'face' side' to slide in these lenses, they were about ÂŁ10 down the welding shop where I went for the 'eye test' (just looking through each one until I found the right one)..
This has also meant that my welding helmet is now always set at the right size for my head as everyone else in the workshop doesn't even bother to try that one that 'makes your eyes wierd'

Thats decided, I going shopping. My son has been ribbing me for being a dinosaur because I won't use his auto helmet, but seeing what you are doing makes a world of difference

Any one on here made a gantry crane in their workshop. Not the type on wheels but over head connected to the frame. Just putting up a new machine shop and going to be making one for loading the cnc plasma and blast room. Looking for ideas

Making a Gantry to Build Our Boat - Ep.1
My son made one for his boat build, it has now been dismantled and recently repurposed as a bogie for moving a shipping container IMG_4978.JPG

I once worked at a farm that had a travelling chain hoist on an rsj bolted under a portal frame, very useful for multitude of reasons, a long time ago though and before yellow paint and SWL

That looks ideal for containers now.
I’m looking to use ibeam trolleys but unsure if I need to have it driven or if it’ll roll well enough to just pull around.

On a flat concrete floor, it is amazing how much weight can be shifted on castors, the shipping container was pushed in with the tele and had to do the last 20 ft on planks on scaff bar rollers due to height considerations.

Put this in in 1978. Left hand side is on a reinforced wall, right hand side RSJ set in the floor, diagonal brace you can just see the end of, just below and to the left of the fluorescent light, braced to the wall. Not sure if it would pass LOLER inspection without signed off design documents these days.

That’s very handy, have you still got it? Bet it would hold a lot more than you realise weight wise.
I’m looking at making some thing like this below.

Don't forget that they will need testing every 6 months or whatever.

I weld up stuff on a little trailer thing (15 x 5 feet) and push it out the shed - or tow it with a tractor if very heavy- and turn the object over with a teleporter - which is being tested every 6 months anyway.

It’ll be over engineered. It’s only got to lift 1ton Max. Think it’s 25ft wide in the barn where it’ll be going. Stupid the whole testing every 6 months. The day after a test the ram could split open like they do on manitou some times.

But fair gets the sh!t shifting.

Took about an hour to fully homogenise a 13m by 6m pit approx 800mm deep. Did it from one location, pointing in one direction. Not bad seeing as the shed has been up since 2015, and never stirred.

Some fair thrust on it. Needs to be resting against a wall, else it goes walkies. But once it's securely against the wall, I reckon we can walk away and let it so its thing. So in those respects, it's better than most of the machines on the market.

Absolute pig of a thing to move around and use, but now we've proven the concept I can start developing mk2.

Chuffed to bits it's worked. Reckon it's bought us 2 wks storage in half our pits, so a week's storage overall. Every little helps, especially in winters like last year.
