You would get the sack for working under that track in most places.
It looks as though I'm under that track!! But it's offset!! Coupled to a 3 ton pulley chain, and I have sacked myself many times over the last 40 years, !! I am a virtue to Health and safety at all times!!! Enduring to all the latest regulations method statements and tick box sheets!! It has enabled me to build a flourishing business over the years!! Unlike the duck and divers, and chancers!!? That are now retired at 50 living in Spain and sit about drinking all day!! I bet there sorry now!!??

What rock was it? We also run a quarry along with our farm and contracting business. Our rock is granite and we use old equipment that was there when we aquired the place two years ago.
It was a hard limestone with a high quarts (Sillica) content, we went into the abandoned quarry which contained 60 feet of water!! The quarry was abandoned in the late 60s because of the cost of processing the stone and the wear on the plant which wasn't justified to keep open as they had a quarry nearby which contained a better quality stone !!
It took a month to pump out the water, and then we had to remove 4 mtrs of silt which wasn't cricket as we had to climb 80 mtrs out the hole up 1/10 haul roads which we had to build tailgates to fit the 3/ 35 ton dumpers.
We had to run a pump 24 hrs a day which is quite common on most holes, then we stitched drilled and blasted the floor to start the operation, then proceeded to blast and crush on a two shift system 5 1/2 days a week maintenance on week ends!! We only had 2 yrs to complete operation the wear on everything was considerable but the sweetener was that we didn't have to pay the tax on every ton of stone produced as you do today,!! Because it was an old quarry that was worked before!!
That offset the high wear rate to some degree! Plus we were only about a mile from the motorway! Network ! When things are running good it's profitable! But breakdowns are costly! And the workload is considerable, I'm not in that work now and personally I don't miss it now, it's a tough business for sure.

Not arguing with you but there's not much off set with track chains? And tied off to the hand rail to and left in the air on a chain I'd be up set if I seem that happening near me. Tracks are nasty work and can be unpredictable to in the way they can move. You can never be to careful at that type of work.
I'll try to be more careful in the future!!
Was it you who took the photo!!?? Just wondering like!!

It seems my attempt to inject some humour into what is a very serious subject has fell short on this occasion!!
Unfortunately over 40 years I have also witnessed two fatalities on site! And as have been said it's a terrible feeling that stays with you! Could these accidents of been prevented!? Almost certainly it's normally a chain of events that lead up to it!!
As I approach the late autumn of my working life the one thing I see that has crept into many industries and workplaces is the lack of any humour today between staff and workers, there is a considerable amount of people doing nothing specific and very few actually doing the job!!
It seems for every man working there is two men paid to watch him!!
Perhaps I got this wrong! But I'm glad I started out when I did and not trying to make it all work now.
I hope fellow farming forum viewers except the pictures and comments as not flippant remarks!! But a bit of light hearted banter into what is a serious subject!
Regards jakeboy

Please keep the pictures coming, I have no interest in nit picking through, other peoples contributions to the forum. We all strive to work as safely as possible and find it evermore difficult to comply with external audits. We all know its for our own good, so please don't spoil a very interesting thread because of a track chain tied to a handrail. If its anything like here, the chain has more than one thing holding it up, that cant be seen in the photo.
Probably take longer to release the supports, than fit the rollers ..............
