Nroso heavy handed email

Moral of story seems to be to do an annual check on points status, and not leave it all 'till suspension notice is imminent, which is what I suspect a lot of us do.

I did that this year 6 points short, 10 days to the deadline. Phoned em up this that and the other. Looked again at online registration and I’ve got another 12 months till renewal

If you have basis and are up to date then all you need to do is send the last three years certificates (email basis if you have lost them) to nroso and you will automatically be re registered. It happens to me every three years because I never claim nroso points.

Where should the limit be for 30 points? 28? 25? Sod it, call it 20 and be done. That will make us look professional...

I submit my BASIS cpd points every three years which replaces sitting through a couple of hours of drivel and what is increasingly a sponsored sales pitch from what I’ve been told about this years course, however I get the same heavy handed officious threat at the end of each period


Totally right to throw the toys out of the pram on the phone, letting them know our dissatisfaction with them is very much needed

Or just do what my neighbour does, he sends one of his workers (never driven a sprayer in his life!) for a free day out and a spot of lunch at the NRSO meeting while he buggers off shooting.

Is it really a profession? It’s a sprayer not a nuclear reactor. How much does it take to read a spray ticket, and keep it at 10k 3 barg or wherever it needs to be?
I agreed with PA1 and 2. A good grounding. Then you learn from experience, from machine specific training (which is never covered by NRoSO) and reading literature, agronomist input etc.This need for ongoing CPD to drive a sprayer is overblown in my view. I’m 52, I have been driving sprayers for 40 years. I’m always up for learning new stuff but to say I can’t continue just because I haven’t recorded some points is balmy in my view. Spraying isn’t the sort of job where you get it wrong more than once anyway. It’s a kind of self regulating career in that respect. Those that can do it, do it. Those that can’t are soon down the road, regardless how many NRoSO points they have.
Sorry to say that a lot of the NRoSO training might sound worthy in a classroom but most of it is about 10% of the actual job. You’ll never be shown how to Jack up a high clearance machine safely and change the wheels, how to change a Ramsey box diaphragm or how to get up a sticky hillside in a hydrostatic by transferring more flow to the back wheels.
Heaven help anyone who thinks they can drive a sprayer because they’ve got 30 NRoSO points.

How many people are killed on the roads each year? Thousands. So why aren’t car drivers required to do ongoing training and earn CPD points to keep their licences?
How many people have been killed by incompetent sprayer drivers? Hardly any.
So let it not be said that any of this NRoSO stuff is based on any kind of scientific risk assessment. It isn’t. It’s purely a measure to appease governments and the public. Appeasement at the farmers cost, is something our industry leaders excel at. They told us it would save us from losing actives. Well we have lost plenty despite taking extreme care so worked out really well. Most of it’s a hiding to nothing.

They tried to get me out of RT last year as I hadn’t had my sprayer MOT due to Covid restrictions. They set me a date over the Christmas holiday as the time limit to have it MOT’d by an approved tester during frosty weather. I’ve never known such an inflexible organisation with so little concern for the logistical difficulties we faced during Covid.
By contrast I am also a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology. If they see you are struggling they actually have folks who can help you out and get you going again. Fat chance of that with this lot.

It’s not as much the practical side I have an issue with , only because I think I’m sorted. It’s the heavy handed attitude. I was basically told rules are rules end of on the phone

I was struggling for a few points last year and was on the COVID isolation list , so couldn’t go out anyway .
I pointed out that there were no meetings , even with agronomist , but the arseholes didn’t take any of this in account .I’ve also spent 2 hours this morning, playing dumb as my sprayer was MOTD by a very nice mechanic, but who honesty was teaching granny to suck eggs, so to speak . I’ve a very basic 18m sprayer that works perfectly and don’t really need someone examining the pipes for a leak or jug testing it at great cost .
memo to self. If I ever pack in farming, set up as a sprayer tester or something

I really think that what is needed is a kind of Quality Assurance “first responders” team to help folk who are struggling before despair sets in and they get thrown off the scheme. For me that’s what a Union is for. Helping its members. So if folks are getting near the deadline and are short of points they get maybe some help with Ei operator or something. Help isn’t illegal is it? Shouldn’t industry organisations be allowed to help those who are struggling rather than seemingly take pleasure in chucking them on the scrap heap?
