cos its a protection racket?
No - Its a tax... You can't spray without it (well not if you need crop assurance which we all do). Its therefore a tax. They can charge what they like, same with drainage rates, basis subscription, red tractor, TASCC assurance. We've allowed ourselves to be audited and charged these taxes and now we have no other choice!

They don’t have to control costs like other businesses. They just have whatever they need and then adjust the charge accordingly. Farmers have to suck it up but can’t pass increase in costs to anyone. Plenty of people keep wanting higher standards (=increased cost) but I’ve yet to find one of these bright sparks coming up with a scheme that delivers more for my produce.
Red Tractor also want more money to “balance the books” from the royalty charge.

I’m not saying it’s right by any means but how much is it compared to how much you spend on chemicals a year crossed with how would your farm manage if all chemicals were banned because the public thought the was used unregulated and miss treated?

Use of Agrochemicals is already regulated, that's why everyone needs a pile of certificates to apply them. The use and recording is a legal requirement.

NRSO, much like FA, just gold plates the rules that are already there, along with a few, arguably unnecessary, additions in order to justify their existence.

We were sold these schemes on the basis that leaving the supermarkets etc to do their own audits would be far worse. Why then, did I have an audit from M&S last week, so that I could supply them with lamb? And guess what, they asked the same questions as FA, with a few extras bolted on to justify their audit.

Thankfully I'm not NRSO registered, nor FA on the crops. I'd rather sell my small pile at a £5 penalty, than pay more than that in these voluntary taxes. If you have a bigger heap, then I can see that they've got you all by the short and curlies.
