Nuffield D4 with Six Cylinder Engine

Think some of the older BMC or Leyland truck engine were fitted (not in the factory), as an after thought for the single chop contractors?

We got the Perkins engine off a nearby farm in the 60`s, they had put a 6 cyl wagon engine in the nuffield for foraging, unfortunately first time out they went through the hedge:D:D:D:D as when the clutch was pressed the inertia of the chopper drove back the pto shaft back through the gearbox although the clutch was pressed, suffice to say, only fit to a dual clutch model.

Wasn't there a Nuffield P6, ie fitted with Perkins 6 cylinder? I thought one changed hands a couple of years ago for £50000. Only a few made, ahead of their time power wise. Would have been awesome.

I had a D4 with the BMC 4 cylinder and 1000 psi hydraulics. Carting beet was a nightmare. Backed up to heap, brake on, full throttle and string round hydraulic valve lever to hold it in raise position then jump out and get my back under beet trailer to help it start tipping. Or the loader under the front of trailer if it was a big load. 1000 psi hydraulics, who thought of that one?

20 years later some american tractors were still only running at that pressure

there is a local tale about the IH dealer here (rustons of st ives) sending out an all singing and dancing IH 706 that they had imported, was all going well while it was ploughing in the dry, when they hooked it onto a loaded 3 tonne pettit cart and found it couldnt tip it, that was the end of that idea.

They did eventually sell 1 i believe, and after a few thousand hours the engine was so knackered it was taken out and replaced by a 6.354 perkins

im sure there was an article about in one of the magazines many moons ago????

pretty sure that had a 6 pot leyland engine though?
Just looked it up, 6cyl 351 cu in (5760cc), 70bhp @ 1700rpm. 3700kg without ballast, 14 x 34 tyres. So only a small tractor by today's standards, yet it had awesome reputation - does that say something about modern-day compaction perhaps, that we need much bigger tractors to do the same job?
Wasn't the Perkins P6, as mentioned above and also fitted in the E27N Major, 'only' about 45hp?

Incidentally a good forum for BMC/Nuffield/Leyland tractors and stuff http://leyland.conforums.com/index.cgi

perkins p6 in the major had 2 different specs...the agri engine, which had cast iron pistons, revved to 2000rpm and developed 45hp. The industrial spec engine had ally pistons and revved to nearer 3000rpm

shortly into the life of the P6, it was found that allowing the cast iron pistoned engine to over-rev was causing bent con rods, and damaged bearings, so they standardised on ally pistons on all the variants

personally i think the L4 engined conversion was better, it wasnt as nose heavy and the L4 was a keener starter in cold weather

As for the MP6, it was purely a towing tractor, designed mainly for roadwork and driving a drum, it was marshalls last throw of the dice after they pursued with thier outdated (but very efficient) single cylider range

The MP6 was very similar in design terms to the David Brown 50D, a large, towing only machine built for roadwork and beltwork, with oddles of power, they really wasnt suited to fieldwork in practical terms

Shame that neither really did well in terms of actual sales

Could this ever have been the same in with the MP6, as the Leyland 350 engine was mainly built as a commercial 90hp unit:scratchhead:

Are there some superpower MP6's out there.

Nuffield had a 6 cyl kit in 1960s, had to be fitted at a dealer with new or gold seal engine

Because Rainthorpe were making P6 nuffields with 80hp, like this one

Had a Nuffield 10/60 when was younger and it had a Leyland 6 cylinder engine, believe it was originally a lorry engine! Ah it did go well it did 33mph and quick off the mark too. Knew I was bombing around as if you couldn't see me then the black smoke gave me away. Wish still had it.

biggest let down on any nuffield were the brakes....

we had a 4/65, still on the original 3.8 engine, but opened out and shod on 13.6/38s instead of 12.4/36s

easily capable of 27mph, providing you could keep it on the road, and had the distance of a football pitch to stop it in!!!

Definitely a Rainthorpe conversion that one. They used to keep a spare engine on the workshop shelf for most of their common tractors !

didnt they "triple D" a pair of nuffields at some point as well, remember seeing a pic of a nuffield and 3 ton cart backed up a home made portable ramp, tipping lime into a taskers land drive spreader towed by another nuffield?????
