Just wondering if anyone reccomends a good nutrionist in the somerset/dorset area?
Have heard Good things about Robbie Taylor but he is something to do with Velcourt farms if i am right. Would you be able to use him if we aren't a velcourt farm?

Many thanks

I wouldn’t have anything to do with Velcourt, disgusting how they operate

In what way ?

Know of several big/medium sized farms including college farms that employed Velcourt to run them. After a short time they were advised that the businesses couldn’t be viable and shut them down and in most cases the farms were subsequently sold......

To Velcourt who then ran them as they were before.

It’s mainly places that employ management to run the farms that they end up running.
Often the owners know little about agriculture having acquired the farms.

I bought some cows from one college that they shut down. New principal had no background in agriculture and had them in to sort out the farm. They said it need large sums of money to keep it running which the principal wasn’t prepared to spend. So it was shut down and sold off (to Velcourt) to fund the rest of the college.

Well I'm n

Well I'm not looking for management as such just a nutritionist. Might have a look at life but wanted to see if people have had any experience with Velcourt and Robbie Taylor.
No experience of Robbie Taylor, but my eldest lad is a farm manager working for Velcourt managing a fair acreage, and from what I see they do a very good job and don't suffer fools, so I'd have thought he'd be worth a try.

Depends on your system a bit as some nutritionalists are better at the high yields etc. Our cowman visited a velcourt run farm this week where the nutrition advise came from hq and the cows were fat as barrels with v poor fertility. Someone condition scored them all as 2.5 when they were closer to 4. My chap comes your way once a month so pm me if you want details

I really like this chap. He did some independant nutrition work for me 7 odd years ago. Still feed same ingredients now although formulations change a bit through the year.

http://www.improvingfarming.uk/luppo-diepenbroek/

Luppo was a great nutritionist. Looked at rations totally differently to everyone else. Used him when he was with MoleValley and when he first went on his own.

In later years we found he favoured low input style farming. Haven’t used him for several years now.
Can learn loads from him.

Another great guy that went solo was David Donaldson. No idea where he operates now or if he still does. Website not updated for 3 years.

Thanks very much for the comments, alot of food for thought. Really need to get someone with a bit about them so will do a bit of research on the suggestions, cheers again.

I’ll admit he likes to look at the bigger picture rather than chasing that last marginal litre.

General well being, longevity and rumen health and fertility come highly with Luppo.

He gave me the faith too try grass inclusion in high yield cows where those sales reps before and even myself had doubts.

Luppo is part of a discussion group I'm in. His ideas are a bit out there and pretty anti the status quo in farming (which is no bad thing) but I learn something everytime I see him. (y) He's mad keen on soil heath too, which combined with nutrition is a very interesting mix.

I worked on 2 velcourt dairy farms and both were pushed hard but well run, Robbie knows how to push cows and get results, if the farm with fat cows doesnt get nutrition advice from Robbie it must be run differently to the others as i am pretty sure he is now he now oversees all of velcourts dairy herds. Velcourt often go in once 1 possible more farm managers have completely cocked up, cant always save a sinking ship.

out of interest what do these kind of people charge? Having never used one I’m just interested really,my cake rep samples my forage..I do the ration myself and tell him what I feed through the wagon and he tinkers the cake in parlour accordingly,I guess you’d say I’m paying for it through buying the cake
