NZ Groundswell protests.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12458335

The removal of all subsidies back in the 80’s (?) meant that government has had no tools to control farmers hence the free for all on animal welfare and pollution controls which are now gradually being implemented but without significant recompense.
“Groundswell” is justifiably concerned for the future of NZ Ag but really doesn’t need to morph these demonstrations into an “anti-woke” agenda, that is a separate issue.
Could UK Ag organise anything on this scale in 47 major towns and cities or would it just end up like cats in a sack?

My NZ wife’s cousin’s lambing skills in the 70’s began and ended with shooting those ewes which were any bother, when things got tougher in the 80’s he used to carry a sharp knife instead of wasting a bullet - In this century his son just lets the ewe die.
Wouldn’t be acceptable in the UK.
Tail docking of dairy cows (to benefit the milker in a parlour) was I believe banned within the last 10 years so progress is being made.

You hear this a lot and I’m going to call an element of bull sh*t 😂

So if they found a ewe needing lambing and could pull it they’d just kill it instead 😂 because none of them can lamb a sheep 😂 pull the other one.

Plenty of us on here will shoot a ewe that we cannot lamb, or has various other issues, rather than take to a vet. And plenty of folk put a sheep down with a knife or blunt trauma.

Sure they have unshepherded lambing, but I bet they don’t actually lose much of a higher % of ewes than we do one once or twice daily checks. And I think you’ll find plenty of crap farmers in the uk not checking sheep properly and losing far More!

Except I didn’t hear this from a Facebook post, I got it from the horses mouth, so to speak, when he took us on a tour of The Waikato showing me and my wife, his cousin around the farms he has sold in his current guise as a realtor and the area which was cleared from bush generations back.
Also visited the church at Waingaro built on land donated by the family.

Recently?

Animal welfare is part of many export production contracts there now. It's the buyers, not the government, that have been setting their standards.

These protests are anti-government, not anti buyer - Maybe they are not really sure who they are protesting against o_O

Could be 10 or 12 years ago but they certainly haven't increased their labour input in that time, except for maybe a bit more wielding of a biro ;)

Maybe he was just a crap farmer, which is why he is now a realtor. I’ve met a lot of kiwi stock men and woman, and they have been some of the most proficient I’ve come across. Yer sure the sheep look after themselves but that’s the reality of successful profitable farming. Not 200 sheep you have five folk working on and rely on a government hand out to repay your losses on the stock 😂

Nah, its his son who now runs the farm with his english (essex) wife. Seems to spend more time on the polo circuit than on the farm though....

It only took half a dozen people to organise and coordinate. Then a couple of contacts in each area so that the farmers know where to be and when

I'd say it would be relatively simple to do similar in the UK, if there are clear-cut matters widely opposed by 90% or more of farmers.
There's the stumbling block IMO, looking at various threads on here they generally run on for dozens of pages while people justify their choices (eg Red Tractor) and that's where the cat-scratching erupts

As you say, most "movements" strike trouble when farmers start behaving like angry women: "and that's another thing.." because the united opposition effect is diluted greatly when this happens.

Using RT again as an example, a lot of people violently opposed to RT are still in it, so what use is a protest in this example?

It would still be relatively easy to organise, but it needs to be an effective and simple message - the downside of rolling up in an expensive vehicle and claiming to be 'hard done by' is that you lose a degree of public support in the process

Yes it really is actually quite straight forward, if you gave a fancy vehicle you are not hard done by.The ultimate protest against rt is to leave it.
Its not rocket science.

ment to be on this program if FA. on farm it's workable

the newer things govt is pushing for more waterways etc etc. areas that can't be worked up etc all forced on to farmers with out any return for lost ground or being able to farm some areas fully
The SNA thing stinks.
A lot of farms down here were bought on the proviso they'd slowly be logged to finance development, then the logging was stopped.

Now to have the land around it "confiscated" just because there isn't any degree of trust from the untrustworthy... do you actually know anyone who looks at a pristine area and says "I really should improve that,, needs more cowsheds and concrete and a couple of big silos on the ridge"??

I sure don't. Then again, NZ has been confiscated a couple of times in the past 200 years, so it's only one last time

The tools to control animal welfare have been in place since the removal of subsidies via the markets. Pollution is not really an issue, most farmers are aware on the environment they live and work in and do look after it, dirty dairying and swimmable rivers are soundbites from the Jafas.
