Objecting to a Bridleway.

Yes, we have a dead-end unclassified road up through the farm which has a bridleway on it too. I've put a path beside it for the walkers and cyclists but they still don't move off the road when I drive up it!
But it’s a private road I presume, not a public one? In other words, the public are only entitled to use it as a bridleway.

If you own the land that the right of way sits on, surely they can't change the use of it without you knowing?

Make your footpath into a bridleway and you'll have kids on motorbikes tearing round every weekend and school holiday :banghead:

That’s illegal
no, adopted by the council pre-70s so they have to maintain it!
so it’s a public road then?

There is a road leading to us that has a public bridleway sign, but it’s not a public bridleway, it’s a public road. Then the road becomes private, but is also a public footpath.

Beware or look forward to an explosion of ' Green Laneing ' the motorcycle enthusiasts are studying local roads and what restrictions apply to whatever roads.

In many cases these roads run through farms and although are walked, not been used by motorcycles until recently.

Personally, I am all for it, i'd much rather get to the top of the fells or mountains on a quad than burst my lungs walking :)

Funny what constitutes a vehicular road , as a UCR

Some are completely overgrown or a series of rock steps or cross quite wide rivers - all roads though

All I’m saying is that a bridleway is a bridleway. However, there are also Boats (byway open to all traffic).

You will find actually that you can have a Bridleway or a Footpath on a "route" that also has wider public vehicular access as JB mentions. Usually as an Unclassified County Road or UCR, but not always.

The OP needs an expert, David Blackie from a Brum firm whose name escapes me, is very impressive. I have come across him from both side of the fence

Be grateful if you just get legally ridden bikes, what REALLY screws a "Green Lane" is hordes of 4WD vehicles out for a "winching session on a lane in mid Winter! Quads tend by their very nature, to be light footed, unlike 3/4t of hoss!

I have been riding since the mid 70s, and have found that long time residents along routes with vehicular rights are usually well aware of them, it's newer arrivals that suddenly find that their des-res in the country, is actually a public highway!! I can remember having a chat with one in South Shropshire yonks ago, and I suggested that they go back to the Solicitor who had carried out the searches and ask for an explanation. ;)

Just been having a look at an old handbook: apparently there are (at least there were in 1994) about 4000miles of RUPPS (roads used as public paths) remaining to be reclassified in England. The Highway Authorities have a duty to reclassify according to customery use. “In the meantime, they have at least bridleway status.”
