Octopost fencing

Anybody used the octopost materials for a post and rail fence? I have a half acre paddock that is ready for redoing and saw these at Lamma and liked the look of them and the depth the creosote is pumped in to them, it's not cheap but with a 25yr guarantee is it worth it? Also like the slightly unconventional look of it

I've used their post and rail timber , top quality and will last a long time , very hard timber , you would know when nailing into it , if I was doing a post and rail job in the morning it's what I'd use . Best on the Irish market anyway.

I thought you said it dried out too much?

The good thing about their rails is they have an overlap of about 6" so you don't have to be so exact with the posts if you are rough like me

I seen octoposts for the 1st time in our local suppliers yard. I wasnt impressed, i thought they looked like the cheapest wood just soaked in creosote? looked like they wouldnt stand up to a cow leaning over them much.

Rob, local dealer to us is Tut at 'the log shed' , my new fences are all octoposts ,Im looking forward to Tut replacing them all in 24 years time

theve calmed down now but for a while you could smell them from half way across the field.

@DieselRob
Well that's a lot more local than some bloke in Scotland who I was told on the stand was my nearest stockist!

I'll be having a word with Tut very soon in that case! Thanks.

Drove my first pallet of octoposts last week, pretty impressed. Most holes had to be rock spiked and you can got the octoposts pretty hard so they must be quite strong. Nice tight grain, we will see how long they last but anything must be better than the 8 year lasting green rubbish. Trying few Creopost as well, they look a bit beefier but I'm not sure which is best! Photo of a 6 inch of cut, driven posts and some green rubbish.

Theres nothing wrong with the octoposts. They will last the 25 yr guarantee no problem and if you like them buy them.
But what you need to watch for is because there cut to shape they are removing the sap wood. This is the part that takes in the treatment and also gives the post its flexibility. Not all posts are cut directly down the centre of the tree so treatment can be uneven and the removal of too much sap wood makes it easier for the post to split.
I find the standard posts are too short at 5'3" and too small a diameter without going to the next size up which takes you up a price bracket. This wont affect the post and rail though as you'll need the larger posts regardless.

They also have a tendency to break at a ring of knots but thats the woods fault and most creo posts (redwood) will have some trouble.
So the 8 sides is more a marketing/branding image but doesnt add anything extra to the fence post itself just potentially weakens it to some degree.

I get the impression from various threads on here that Fence&Forget are as good as any /better than most. And should last quite a bit longer than 25yrs?

Unless one goes for the utilitarian Clipex look?
