Of Mices and Men!

Like a great many others, I have been stunned to watch the great plague of mice destroying feed stocks in Australia and I also
recalled reading on TFF of a shed full of grain being rejected because of a couple of mouse dropping being found in the grain.

Watching all those little critters flooding farm properties in Oz I couldn't help but recall the old German story of the Pied Piper of Hamlyn.
I also remembered a time when distraught shop keepers, harrased by youths congregating outside their shops, took to intalling
something called a mosquito and it emmited an irritating sound, audible only to the young and hey-presto youth stopped congregating,
making a mess, and causing no end of problems.

Do you suppose that a sound system installed in a grain store could emit a sound that could discourage Ratty and Master Mouse from
entering in to scoff and defile your grain?

Just some crazy, out of the box, townie thinking but do you think that there could be any milage in it?

I appreciate that things may have moved on, but a farm I worked on years ago, had some kind of sonic box to deter their massive rodent population. It had a red light on top, so that we could tell when it was switched on. Sadly, there were frequently that many rats sitting on the box it was impossible to tell whether it was on or not! Not that it made any difference.

Probably a lot of people sitting around waiting to sell magic boxes that don't work but the ones at the shops, I believe, were successful.

I do remember someone fitting a burglar alarm system for an old lady who lived across the road from us and all she got was an empty box on the wall, at a great price. A similar trick was pulled on the old lady who lived next door but one from us but that time I was fortunate to see the guy and with the information that I was able to give the police they caught up with him and persuaded him to refund her cash. .

We had some when we used to store grain, on a small scale, in the uk. We had the sonic boxes and they worked well in the buildings around pallets etc. . But you still had to bait properly and we had a wood yard next door that didn't bait at all. I got the council in and they were brilliant, unlimited bait for a fixed fee.

You can still buy sonic devices to discourage everything from moles to rats and even covid if the snake oil salesman can convince you. There is a reason they are not seen more often, they just do not work.
I had one claiming to deter cates from my garden, watched my neighbours pet walk up and study it for a few seconds, before it went back to its job, for the evening crapping on my borders and murdering my song bird population😡😡😡

Rather than the Snake Oil magic boxes, I was thinking more of a much larger sound sytem that could fill the grain store with anti rodent sounds. A bit of DIY with redundant music systems could perhaps fill the bill for a little experimentation.

I believe someone did something similar with a mine detecting box, and sold it all over the world, did he go to prison in the end? I heard about it on the radio

flower of scotland?

Funny how the mind works sometimes but I just remembered that an uncle of mine served in a Scots regiment in Italy during WWII and wore the kilt. Please note that I didn't write Scotch regiment! But despite believing that nothing is worn under the kilt, I have wondered if they wore a 'jockstrap' and that is where the word comes from.
