Off block handling

We've taken on an extra 55 acres about 15 minutes from the yard. I had to load up some stock we had sold on Sunday and a 15-minute job turned into a 2-hour job when they wouldn't go into the trailer with a few hurdles around them. We do have a cattle handling forcing gate with a few hurdles that fits on a 3 point linkage but its semi-permanent in the yard.

Is there a design that I can do with some fence posts that gives me a single file run into a race? It will always be smaller stock up there between 4 and 15 months of age so not finishing stock or cows. Any ideas appreciated

What I do with a round pen of hurdles is, once the cattle are in, pull the hurdles round to make the pen smaller. This then leaves a race and I can back the trailer into it. If it’s wet then it’s hard work pulling the hurdles around and for any amount of cattle, you need a few hurdles.
I was going to make semi permanent pen, but accidentally did this one day and have done it ever since.

If they are trained to electric fence, you can corral them very nicely, providing they aren't too wild.
It's been abit of a revelation here the last few years, moving/ handling cattling with leccy fence.

Some strainer sized posts and 4x3's or 6x3's rails would soon make a decent pen/ race for loading

Driving round NZ last year, there were loads of road side loading facilities made of timber, with loading ramps, the ramps probs aren't necessary with our style of tail boad loading, but the penning designs behind might be useful.

we used to drive a few strainers and use two lengths of 2inch box for sides to tie pallets to. strainer at start, end and middle of the 25ft length and 1 big gate at the back 2 wee gates at the loading side, some were more permanent others were all tied with string but left handling cattle alot easier on land not owned, few hours set it up and if not there next year it was easy to take down and store. was set up and used to meal in all year so cattle were used to it.

we used a funnel with ht rylock and posts. the posts at 5mtr centres and the rylock pulled fiddlestring tight. a plain wire 9" above the rylock to finish off.

If you’ve got it for a good length of time, it be worth putting up a permanent style pens. Sleepers an rails. An feed them in there.

Just buy a load of big Heavy cattle hurdles and take them down with the loadall... set up when needed, use as a race if needed and take home again... permanent handling facility left next too a road is just asking for somebody too load up your stock and shut the gate on there way out

This is what I do. Bought some GST heavy duty cattle hurdles, set up a big pen thats open ended on one end. Usually for a few days or a week before I'd start putting a bit of cake into them in the pen. Then, when the day comes to pen the cattle up there's no chasing around, just chuck the feed in and close the hurdles up behind them. Once cattle have been moved then go and pick the hurdles up, job done. Very flexible and can be moved around and set up wherever.
